Too spoiled by the improvements in game mechanics, not having a physical/special split for types breaks the game as far as typing is concerned. Gen 3 competitive play wasn't at all healthy or robust, and even with a shit ton of new Pokemon you barely had any new additions to the OU meta.
Pokemon meta is still laughable in a lot of ways, but the paradigm shifted with Gen 4 and gen 6.
