Reminds me of Xenoblade Chronicles.
There was a shitload of unique NPCs with quests and everytime you did a quest for them (which mostly included other characters as well), the contstellation-thingy became more and more wired. Maybe it's something similar to that.

Really glad I bought a Japanese 3DS while I was there studying now. I don't want to wait until next year to play this, so I'll just get it digitally in Japanese and then physical when it finally comes out in Australia (assuming it doesn't suck).

Probably, but I liked friend areas better, they were either cute or interesting places, and the recruited Pokémon dialogues in Gates to Infinity are more generic.
