Originally animated in Japan, Pokémon: The First Movie" had to be virtually reimagined for American audiences. Nintendo, which owns all rights to Pokémon in America, brought 4Kids Entertainment on board to handle all the creative aspects of essentially "Americanizing" the movie.

4Kids Entertainment's Norman Grossfeld, along with Michael Haigney and John Touhey, dramatically rewrote the script, incorporating all-new story elements. Grossfeld explains, "Our first challenge was to rewrite the film and dub the new script over the footage. We also rescored the entire movie with all new music that would better reflect what American kids would respond to."

Masakazu Kubo: "The people at Warner also gave us some hassle over the script. According to them, the Japanese original does not distinguish clearly enough between the good guys and the bad. Such a movie would not be successful in a multiethnic country like the United States, they insisted, because the viewers would not know who to identify with and who to cheer on. In other words, the heroes and villains needed to be identified clearly. They accomplished this by revising the various characters' lines."

I mean, when I watched the movie I thought it was pretty obvious that Mewtwo is a villainous (albeit sympathetic) character.

And what do you suppose happened to the trainers who didn't make it, hmmm?

I mean, in the opening scene you see dozens of trainers jumping into the storm, but when Satoshi and pals get there, there's only like three other trainers there. What do you think happened to the trainers who didn't make it? Again, does the audience really need to TOLD what happens to people who sail into a hurricane? Are Americans this thick?

How do you know that that Anon doesn't speak Japanese? It's a known fact that, outside of openings and voice actors, the dub of the Pokémon anime is complete garbage. 4Kids hasn't been dubbing it for years but what they did was awful. Heck, they would randomly change things for the sake of it. TPCi isn't as bad but it still sucks.

His intentions were different. It's easier for kids to understand "I am an evil guy who made a hurricane to kill people" is evil than to decide if "I only want to meet strong people so I made a hurricane to keep weak people away from me, and some people tried anyway and got killed" is evil. I'm not defending it as much as I am saying I understand where they were coming from. Personally I agree with Mew's sentiments in the dub more, and I'm pretty undecided on which version of Mewtwo I prefer.

I'd take 4kids back in a heartbeat, dubious dubbing practices and all. At least they put effort into the dub, have passable voice acting, and have even once kept in an original Japanese song albeit added English lyrics to it

Technically Mewtwo never killed anyone. If someone is dumb or courageous enough to sail into a storm, that's their own decision.

And I don't think anyone actually died. IIRC at the end of the movie, Mewtwo teleports everyone back to the pokemon center, and you can see the trainers who didn't make it, safe and sound.

The English dub did change his motivations quite a bit. In the English version he wanted to rule the world. In the Japanese version, he just wanted people to acknowledge his right to exist, and not to be seen as a cheap copy.

4kids was full of shit a lot of the time, but I didn't cringe every time one of the characters opened their mouths to speak. Most of them sounded believable enough, if not goofy.

TCPI honestly sounds like the actors are people off the street reading off a script with little context and no emotion.
