I suck so bad at nuzlocke I'm going to try Y again (probably last time for a while)
I can only use the exp. share while grinding on wild pokemon, battle chateau or the various restaurants. Last number in this post pics my starter (1-3 Chespin, 4-6 Fennekin, 7-9 Froakie, 0 means look at next number)

The leveling curve in Fire Red Evolution is too steep for me to bother another attempt. After Brock you're like lvl 16. Then after Mt Moon probably just a level or two higher. Then the fucking nigglet bridge balls all the way from 16 up to 24. Then the trainers after that only get higher. Can't deal with this garbage.

Nuzgen I have a question lately I've been playing randomized but don't like getting fully evolved mons early because it's a game breaker. An example would be that I got a Haxorus as my first catch in Castelia, but wouldn't mind getting an axew.

I don't run windows and don't care to dick around in wine to get the rom randomizer to work, so I've been using cheats to randomize encounters. Would it be cheating if I got a fully evolved encounter as the first one and then set the next encounter to be guaranteed as it's first form? My concern is that it feels like cheating by picking my catch.

Your run, your rules. I don't see a problem with it but that seems like a terribly tedious thing to do when the universal randomizer allows you to select encounters of similar strength to the regular zone.

Again, this mostly comes down to it being a tough thing to do on a universal scale. There are many Pokemon which evolve in ways unrelated to levelup, and it would be tough to decide what level to start including them at in a fair way. Plus, even in the original games some Pokemon can be caught at "illegal" levels (I'm looking at you, Metapod/Kakuna, and especially you, Level 9 Pidgeotto in Yellow). I think that the "Similar Strength" option I added in 1.5.0 already discourages stronger Pokemon from appearing early on enough to make a "fair" gameplay experience (especially if you limit your starter or pick weaker ones manually).

So it's kind of moot because discouraged ≠ law. Aside from this randomized to me means actually random, not reassigning the same number of possible encounters to an equitable amount of possibilities. Which is how the randomizer behaves.

I understand it's tedious, because I already play no legends as a rule and that can be tedious because it prevents me sometimes as many as 2 encounters before I can actually catch (not to mention murdering my team because I can't escape).

Why would you need Wine? The universal randomizer is in java, which is cross-platform. I randomize shit on linux all the time.

I believe the version of java that comes with most distros is sufficient (Although I'm using Oracle's Java 8), but to actually get it to run, you have to go into the properties of the .jar file, and in the permissions tab, select the 'enable executing file as program'. Then it ought to run like any other program.

If you're worried about fully evolved pokemon being too OP, you could always consider a rule to keep anything that you catch at a lower level than it evolves at a certain number of levels less than the rest of the team, to keep things fair.

I have the same issue with randomizers, but I think I found a pretty good solution:

0 to 2 badges: Can only catch 1st stage mons, if you encounter an evolved mon, run and try again

3 to 4 badges: Can now catch all 2nd stage mons as well

5 and above badges: Can now catch anything

Works pretty well for me. You could also just catch whatever you want, but "unlock" them with gym badges per evolution stage like above.

Defeated Lenora with this team.

My strategy worked like a charm:
Uproar spam with Spot and using Maddy's detect every turn after I killed on of Lenora's team to counter retaliate.
I switched Maddy out for Kevin when her Bouffalant with Air slash came in, and switched them back when she send out Bibarel when he died too.
Things got dicey when Spot's uproar was disabled, but he managed with his psybeam
(It got Bouff confused, which saved it from retaliate..)

I still can't believe my plan worked. Holy shit.

Update on my run. Evolved Gore, saving his final form for after psychic gym. Evolved Halestorm into a mighty Kindgra, still bummed about having Swift Swim.
Caught Opeth and Litwick that replaced Battletoad.

Trained everyone up to 46 for now. Except Opeth who is 49 just so i could learn Shadow Ball earlier.

Okay, first gym complete. And our first evolution! Bill Nye evolved into Staravia in the gym match. He's definitely MVP right now, but I need to level up my other 'mons.

Small question, as it has been a long time since I played gen 2-5 pokemon games, and it might be my memory, but is the damage in pokemon x/y and oras higher? I've been trying to nuzlocke them, but I'm getting randomly critted for 60 to 100% of my shitmons health (lost my 54 lucario to a crit aura blast, 52 greninja to a crit magnitude 9, 48 slowbro to a crit moonblast from xerneas and 39 my charizard to a crit power gem, though I deserve that last one since I forgot that grumpigs always have power gem). Most enemies also get obliterated by crits (returns from snorlax or fly from my crobat, which aren't offensive powerhouses), but it puts me on edge all the time when using slow pokemons or moves that aren't 100% hit.

Spent what must have been about two hours over the past few days smashing rocks in Cianwood City trying to find a Heart Scale before I eventually remembered about that hidden one on Route 32. Are Heart Scales only findable via Rock Smash post-E4? From what I can tell from my Google searches the answer is no, but I can't believe I'm that unlucky when there are people complaining that it took them a whole 30 rocks to do it when I must be well into the hundreds by now.
Managed to finally give my capoeramon one of his signature moves at least now (fuck Triple Kick anyway)

Decided to do a Wonderlocke on X, just got to the forest, so got my first 3 trades in.
All 3 are female, Elektrike and Tentacool are just randomly caught but Absol has been bred. Level 1, has perish song, Sucker Punch, Assurance and Play Rough.

Thanks, got 2 more now, had to do some stuff so only just got to the first gym.
Just got to get Zubat up to lvl 15 so it can wing attack its way through the gym. Otherwise I have no moves that are super effective on bugs.

The only time I've EV trained in a nuzlocke was on Heart Gold where my only response to Lance was a Quagsire with Ice Beam. Decided to grind it only on Sp.Atk yielding pokemon. Helped a little bit.

I got lucky that the elektrike was level 5 and Tentacool was 6 so managed to level up okay.
Just beat the first gym, and visited the prof to trade away his charmander.
2 new additions to the team, Froakie, level 10, looks like a breeding reject but not Protean sadly. Also the first male i've received today.
Donphan looks good but he is level 37 so can't make use of him for a while.

What degree of random would you recommend? Random wilds and trainer pokemon is a given.

I always thought that Cubone was overrated. No disrespect. Just making it a rare catch in r/b/y got hype but that it's just a good physical defender and an acceptable ground type because of bonemerang/bone rush being multi-hit moves and to a lesser extend bone club. Here are the most recent additions to my team, unclear as to how these guys are 'similar' per the randomizer's rule; but honestly I can't turn my nose up at them considering the shitmons I have in the box.
Cassius is sassy with guts
Dean is relaxed and has shed skin
Fern is quiet and has leaf guard.
Probably going to teach Fern light screen and/or reflect and let her hold my light clay. Alternatively I could teach her sunny day and have her hold a heat rock. Probably best to teach light screen (she has decent def) and sunny day to leave her open for stab razor leaf/magical leaf and synthesis for healing. Using her exclusively to beat something to death from behind a reasonable defensive wall.

Anyone who wants to weigh in feel free. That said i'm going to sleep so I won't respond till morning. Not that /nuzgen/ isn't slow as a rule.

For me it's Munchlax.

I was locking Volt white 2, and was about to face Elesa. I only had to grind my Krororok. It died almost immediatly.

My catch for the route near Nimbasa was the Munchlax in the hidden grotto, so I decided to grind it instead and make it my tank. Learned it Bulldoze for coverage, kept stockpile, Body slam and screech. Gave the fucker Eviolite to buff it's already decent defence.

It wrecked her shit without trouble. It took 4 crits and it just didn't go down.

I have a question regarding the "catch the first pokemon you see, and only that pokemon in that area" rule.
What if I've already caught that pokemon? Say I have a zigzagoon, and I see another zigzagoon in the next area?

Maybe. Depends on what buff/debuff you had access to. For example evasion is an easy way to stop Roxie because her mons signature moves have low accuracy to start and require poisoning to be really dangerous. Using evasion coupled with the pecha berries that Cheren gives you a decent advantage to sweep. But what's done is done.

Arceus is indeed capricious. In exchange for Brotodile I lost Ms.Cleo (Kadabra) and Francine (Swellow) to Petrel. I could have prevented Ms.Cleo from the explosion maybe with a reflect instead of thinking Psywave + 80(+) Sp. Atk + 80(+) Spd = OHKO. It held on with a sliver of health and punished me for it. I can't recall how I lost Francine, probably a similar hubris.

Replaced them with lackluster proxies. Data the Metang has a meek Sp.Atk and Confusion as it's only psychic move til learning Psychic at 36. I've taught him Light Screen and Reflect, and given him light clay to beef his already reasonable defenses. Puff the Swablu has great defensive stats, but literally no Atk. I can afford 3 proteins but they can't polish a turd. I've taught Puff Fly and left it Astonish, otherwise it has Safeguard and a third move I cba to remember. So far it's going to be fun grinding because my next major point is fighting Silver in the underground. I feel less confident now but perhaps that's for the best.

The only other major concern I hold is that with the field items randomized, I won't find Waterfall in the Icy Caves. Iirc key items shouldn't be touched. I'm just scared after the loss of two long standing bros that it was all for nothing.

Also, does Light Clay remain in effect after switching the user out?

I think BS Plat is less difficult, but that's just my opinion. They're both top hard.

Got through Reflecting Cave with very little trouble. Lance only goes & leads with a fucking Miltank, which got two Body Slams in before being put to sleep, allowing El Dreid to set up Reflect. Of course the bastard then got a critical hit & KOed him.
Alcides gets a vengeful critical Brick Break to take the lactating ham planet down.
Skoll switched in to take on Lance's Espeon & Dark Voided it, making way for setting up with Nasty Plot before putting it out of its misery...or attempting to, Because his ace was (of course) a Tyranitar. Luckily Alicides was resistant to everything it had & quickly put it down. Skoll then finished off Espeon.
At this point Lance sent out each of his Kingdra in turn, who seemed to want to do nothing but dance when they were faced with Shuckie.
And finally Typhlosion, who went down like a sack of shit after Lance gave up on using Full Restores on it.

I just started my first Nuzlocke run and I don't care how much this makes my playthrough "not nuzlocke", but I'm putting a 'Bidoof clause'.

Ramos got fucked by Ruse Bird (Chatot) and La Parka (Hawlucha) who will be useless in the next gym, just like Wartortle will again. Rolled through the Power Plant, and now training up the less used team members to be even with La Parka be tackling Clemont's gym.

Burgh a shit.

I had a simple strategy: Start of with Maddy and Spot, Maddy would use detect whilst Spot would take out Masquerain with a Normal Gem powered Dizzy Punch. Since its Scald would kill Kevin in 1 hit.

Switched Maddy out for Kevin, he took down Leavanny and Scolipede without trouble.

Then he send out Heracross, and the trouble started.

Thanks to two misclicks in a row, both Maddy the Meditite and Sandy the Sandslash died.

I tried to go for Sandtomb on Heracross, who was in the red, instead I accidently clicked roll-out. Sandy died due a crit Signalbeam from Yanmega.

Then I send out Maddy in return and used Forcepalm instead of detect, so she died thanks to a double U-turn.

Cheren and Bianca on Route 4 was easy, no deaths or problems there.

Does anyone know if the Ultra Violet hack is any good? I don't see it in the hacks pastebin in the OP, but it looks alright.

The option to catch your starter sounds perfect for a Nuzlocke run. You could end up with ghastly or dratini, or you could start w/ a pichu.

I'm thinking of giving it a try, but maybe one of the others is better? Or should I just use a standard game?

iirc it's incomplete. i'd count it as my first nuzlocke completed excepting it's only up to the silph co. and giovanni. it has 2 rivals but you also have to put up with an even edgier version of kumon (silver). it's a decent game. just doesn't have a conclusion and it was dropped so don't expect it to be done ever.

Typically people limit their pokemon to the level of the next significant opponent's ace. To ban overgrinding.

Also dupes clause is common. If you encounter a pokemon you already have caught you can grab the next instead.

This was probably two years ago, it was a fucking joke. Flanders (or whatever his name is now) was just a toxic shithole harassing everyone. I watched them ban someone for pointing out all of the inflammatory shit that guy was posting in one thread, and they suspended the one pointing it out. It was around the time a bunch of regulars that had been there since the forum started began dropping.

I was banned in the rules thread discussing changes to the rules. I never swore, but called out Flanders calling people dumbasses and fuckfaces. I reported those comments he swore at people and was warned just below suspension levels for "false reporting" and he made another reply calling me a dumbfuck, after they made a post telling everyone to "drop it". It sat there for over a day with nobody removing or doing anything about it. I replied asking if anyone was going to do anything about it, and was banned within sixty seconds.

I went to the ban appeals and basically asked wtf their deal was. Those feminist mods he was talking about came in, mocked me, and banned me even longer.

So yeah, fuck them.

Couldn't learn Swords Dance by level up. TMs were randomised & the only status/buff/debuff one I had which he could learn was Stockpile.

I like the music and the supper effective sounds, most pokemon cries are ok, but bidoof is just awful.
On an unrelated topic, I wish there was a way to make attack animations fast, right now there is only normal or skip (gen 6), such a shame to miss all those animations.

All you really need is after grinding, before gym, after gym, deaths and any of the big battles.
