The females get tons of different styles, while males get like three different shirts, pants and shoes in various shades, all of which are either completely neutral tones or insanely loud neon clusterfucks. I'd kill for just a good white pair of pants for my trainer. They also screwed the pooch not letting you choose a trainer face so you can give them a *bit* more personality.
Aside from that I agree. The towns in XY are so resoundingly bland. The only ones that are even vaguely interesting are Laverre, Lumiose and Snowbelle. Everything else is just... generic looking compared to previous games, and especially next to the huge amount of variety we see in ORAS in the same gen. Unless Z is a huge shake up and gives the entirety of Kalos a makeover, it's going to be dull as hell, but hopefully at least with some extra clothes, formes and megas.
