I've thought of doing that, I've even predicted many foes to predict Protect and wreck them with STAB right off the bat. However, it's just too risky to not have it there at all.

I do this, but I bring something bulky with T-wave so it's easier to mega safely.
Without T-wave, some teams would never let me mega simply because everything they have is faster than standard Beedrill, so giving up a moveslot on something is a small price to pay so it's not dead weight against that sort of team.

As someone who's used both, I can safely say monoRock is actually even worse than monoIce due to combination of bad STAB moves, an extra weakness and alarming lack of good mons of the type. Ice at least has stuff like Froslass for Fighting immunity, M-Abomasnow to break past bulky waters, all the Ice/Water you'd ever want vs Steels and Fires, etc. It says a lot that seeing Keldeo in team preview is an instant autolose for monoRock.
