Maybe change the concept of the story (it's still 8 gyms, beat the champ). And what I think is also needed is for Pokemon to create a massive Pokemon title besides the main games.
I have no problems with the main games for now (besides that Gen 6 is easy and lacks post game and I also think the story is a downgrade compared to Gen 5). But I can understand what people mean with that Pokemon is getting stale.
