I avoided buying it for years because of the bad rep /vp/ gave it, saw it cheap the other day and picked it up and I was pleasantly surprised. Definitely not the best game in the series but it's far from being as bad as /vp/ makes it out to be, was a nice little time waster while I wait for Super.

Nah, it was pretty good. I liked that the final boss was a non-Pokemon entity. Still probably the worst MD game yet, although we still have to see how PSMD will fare.

Yeah, it's completely excusable. Every single major complaint, aside from the text speed, can be chalked up to having to push the game out the door before gen 6 came along and rendered the game outdated. The framework is fine, it's just bare bones.

Explorers of Darkness was my jam as a kid. Super cool dark plot with time travel and betrayal and stuff, cool cast of characters at the base (Freaking guildmaster scares me), that awesome final boss theme when fighting Primal Dialga... 10/10 story, gameplay is good if a bit repetitive. Never bothered with any more side missions or dungeon crawls than I had to.

I can hear the Guild theme in my head even after so many years... Time to go dig up my DS and then put it back because the hinge is broken and download the ROM to my phone instead.

I don't know why everyone is making a big deal of the dumbed down gameplay. If you play these games just for the gameplay, your playing the wrong game because there's a million better dungeon crawlers out there.
