It's sad but this is the most likely the reason. Mega evolution is supposed to be close to legendary tier if not a major power boost for most pokemon with the ability. Can't have the main character having that sort of strength and given a chance to win the Kalos league, now do we? They'd rather give it to that beginner Shotafag for his soon-to-be Sceptile or any of the Kalos trainer trio with their Kanto starters first before even considering Ash as a choice.

I'd be surprised this Ashninja phase is ashime only seeing how it's going to be so specific to ash's traits or to at lest advertise some new type of alternate evolution like primal or some ancient held item that will be 'Z' exclusive only.

Actually I'd say the main problem with giving Ash a mega is they can't ungive him one after. The power of it is less of an issue, I'd say the problem would be trying to power reset him when he loses the league again. They can break the ring somehow but there is also the stone the Pokemon has. It's just a pain for the writers when we reach next season.

Except there'd be nothing to study because one of the key components is Ash and Greninja synchronizing. In fact, mega evolution would have been easier to get rid of because anyone with a key stone can mega evolve a Pokemon as long as there's a bond that works. That's why Sycamore mega evolved Garchomp using Blaziken Mask's key stone while James stole and tried using Sycamore's.

If he oaks his team after the season ends, he wouldnt even be able to use the Mega Ring until he gets another Pokemon thats able to Mega Evolve AND finds a matching mega stone, so that can't be the reason.

I'd say the explaination is far more trivial: the drawers are probably too lazy/underpaid to animate the Mega Evolution scene every time Greninja or some other Mega Pokemon enters the battle. Its far easier to create a shitty form thats barely different from the original and doesnt go through any transformations in battle.

Case in point: Axew.

This kind of thing happens a lot in fiction. An ultimate technique/transformation/mech/etc gets a cheap knockoff for plebs to use, sometimes through some kind of tech forcing the ability to work when it shouldn't.

Protean Greninja with Grass Knot makes a better grass type pokemon than Sceptile.

It stole the spotlight from the other Hoenn starters and is playable in Pokken while the others aren't. It got its Mega Evolution first while Sceptile and Swampert fans had to wait one whole year for theirs' only for their Megas to be worse competitively than Blaziken's. It was even advertised and promoted before Gen 3 even began!

Indeed I believe that Shota is an anime version of Brendan, because in ORAS prerelease the Treecko line was heavily showed on Brendan's possession compared to Torchic and Mudkip. Also his skin is tanned like ORAS Brendan's. Both are from Hoenn (On Brendan's case if he is the rival)
