As for a recommended normal type, first I will warn you against the persia or purugly lines, a lot of trainers fall into that trap but persians and puruglys are actually highly temperamental and can make a lot of trouble, not GIBLE levels of trouble, but more than you want.
the snorlax line is great for people without a lot of time (since they spend most of it sleeping) but you will spend a fortune feeding it and will need a relatively large area for it.
Delcatty, comes to mind if you keep a clean house, if not, avoid. Furret/linoone are surprisingly docile and pleasant pokemon to have around.
Theres the old standbys of stoutlands, cinccino or furfrou that are very nice to raise for their own reasons.
Consider an Ambipom, with enough work it might even be able to help around the office!
If you REALLY want a dragon, do consider a swablu, theyre pleasant and good natured, theyll even tidy up around the apartment during the day, make sure to leave a faucet running when youre not home though so they can bathe the way they like, water bills are cheaper than steel block bills. Dont leave the place a total mess or the swablu will stress out. It should be ok being alone for those time periods but it will need attention when you get home.
