Retool mechanics into making battles play out as a SRPG instead of what they have right now. Make inventory management less cumbersome. Allow for evolution over the course of the plotline without gutting special animations and dialogues between PC and partner.

I remember reading a review of SMD that mentioned a quest where you're given a very standard "find this Pokemon in a dungeon" quest. When you find him, he thanks you for rescuing him. Then suddenly he reveals that it was a trap and activates the monster house on your ass.

Apply a lot more show don't tell to the story. All three games had an a lot of pointless flashbacks and redundant dialogue.

That and the gameplay itself needs a massive overhaul. It stopped me from really liking the games.

Something a bit more substantial. For example
>The job is "I need construction materials". Not satisfied until a number of objects are retrieved from a dungeon regardless of if it's cleared, like the mankey quest from BRT
>The job is "recover my lost object". The object is found to be smashed by vandals and scattered throughout the dungeon. Not complete until all pieces are collected and the group of vandals is defeated.
>The job is "research this dungeon". Not complete until every monster that can be encountered in a dungeon is encountered and defeated.

Easier sidequests have item counters, but the harder ones don't so you can't track progress.

And of course, multiple quests can be taken at the same time.

Have you considered you just don't like the dungeon crawler genre? You should ask for another spinoff (can even be in the same universe as PMD) instead of trying to completely change an existing one.

First of all, since it's a roguelike/dungeon crawler

I get that the Pokémon uses their powers instead of weapons, but you can equip something like gloves, shoulderpads, greaves, to either increase Stats, affinity to some attacks or increase resistance.

Also, some things of EMD could see use.

And since Megas are a thing, you could use them as DOEs and plant forts or something to stop them.
