You don't have to abandon your in-game Pokemon to play competitively, you just have to create one on Pokemon Showdown. You literally don't have to follow Smogon's rules in the actual game. Though it's probably a good idea to breed Pokemon with good IVs and abilities and moves if you actually want to win competitively.

Its true that most of the western Pokemon community plays by Smogon rules. However you'll find more variety in teams with wifi battles than Showdown. Also there's the Japanese and Korean players who play with whats allowed officially, such as evasion boosting and OHKO moves.
