>>24549717The Wii of course has been dead in the water since it stopped trying to compete and was massively overtaken by the 360 and PS3 around 2008-2009.
The DS though remains one of the best selling systems of all time. There are still to this day 3 times as many DS units in the hands of consumers as there are 3DS units, and the last first party releases for the DS were only in late 2012, with third party titles being released into late 2014 (even after wifi service had been discontinued).
But I suspect Nintendo knew that the DS represented a threat to 3DS sales and decided to axe service prematurely in order to aid the flagging sales of their new offering.
Obviously it would not have been worth the money for them, especially since it would have further put 3DS sales at risk. But was it a decision that showed integrity on nintendo's part? I'd say no. Could you imagine the uproar if Activision stopped hosting servers for a Call of Duty game a year and a half after it was released?
It may have helped sales of their new handheld in the short-term, but I think in the long run it has hurt their brand image. Everyone knows they only want to make a profit, but completely cutting service for their 7th gen consoles while Sony and Microsoft are STILL supporting PSN and XBL for the PS3/360 is frankly an embarrassment for them.
