>>24549752the Gen 2 gym league in particular was a bit trickier than other gens, as far as an adventure playthrough goes.
If you chose Chikorita or Totodile, Bugsy's Scyther had a solid chance of just steamrolling you with fury cutter momentum. I remember struggling with a Totodile run cause I didn't pick up a geodude in Union Cave.
Whitney's miltank is a complete shutdown set, attract keeps you from attacking, rollout to deal massive damage while you're in love, milk drink to deal, and Stomp for the flinch chance just as a final "Fuck You".
the only real answer to Whitney the game gave you was a tradable Machop in Goldenrod City, but that was really easy to miss when you were little and didn't bother talking to everyone.
the rest are fine until you get to Claire's Kindra, who only has a weakness to dragon, a move type you can't even get access to until after you get her badge.
The game throws you a bone by giving you underleveled Ice types to use against her before the gym match, but Kingdra's not even weak to ice. And the most powerful ice type in the so far, Piloswine, is weak to water, so that's a waste to train.
But eh, it was a gauntlet when you were 8-10 and had no care for type charts and just wanted to smash things to death with your starter.
