Feeling crippled with nostalgia right now. What's the best way to play Gen II that isn't just replaying the original games? Is there a badass romhack or something?

No Heart Gold/Soul Silver, find the graphics annoying and the game itself laggy.

I own a copy of HG. It just doesn't feel as snappy as later or earlier games. That whole gen feels laggy.

Gen 4 has optimization issues but it's far from the poor job GF did in Gen 6. PtHGSS fixed a lot of speed issues DP had and they feel perfectly fine and snappy.

Nah the best Gen 2 on 3 hack is Crystaldust. Liquid Crystal is different, yes, but it has some really bad ideas in the plot.

I'm replaying pokemon gen 2 myself. There's pokémon crystal 251 that allow you catch/evolve 'em all.

Yeah his plot changes are not for the better. Fedoraman the rival and the small change to the rocket plot. They aren't reborn bad and are for the most part as short as any plot moments the original had.

Either way, all Gen 2 remakes are unfinished works with LC being the farthest along.

Were there some big plot changes in Shiny Gold?

I only recall that OC-Noland-like trainer, they should have replaced him with Cal or something who had a lot of unused teams.

Emu Edition's your best bet like others said. I personally never had any issue with HGSS but if you aren't feeling it then you aren't.

Best way to play gen II is to go all physical. I too went on a nostalgia binge last year, and I definitely recommend playing them on a GBC just for the authenticity factor. I bought Stadium 2 for storage, played through Blue version and did the Mew glitch, then transferred all my bros to Stadium 2 and played through Crystal just to the point where I was ready to do the Celebi glitch. I did it, then built my ultimate team with Mew, Celebi, Dragonite + 3 starters, and steamrolled my way through the post-game. It was a blast but now I'm all burnt out with gen II. Will probably replay yellow version this year.

Eh, I'd say Gen 4 and Gen 6 are about equal. Diamond and Pearl are easily worse than XY in terms of optimization, but Platinum did fix a lot of the issues
