Like it or not, POKÉMON HAS NO MEANINGFUL COMPETITION ON THE MARKET. They can keep churning out mediocre games because who else are making okayish monster trainer games with widespread appeal? EVEN IF THERE EMERGED A NEW COMPETITOR THEY WOULD HAVE TO COMPETE WITH A POWERFUL BRAND WITH MORE THAN HALF-A-THOUSAND MONSTERS IN THEIR FRANCHISE.
