Because his character has a clear simple progression and you can expect him to have a conclusion to his story. The mega specials were way better than what I thought they would be. One thing that's iffy about it was the way Lysandre convinced him not to associate with Sycamore but it's not completely unreasonable (don't get him involved unless you're strong enough to protect him). Everything after that which showed him gradually becoming obsessed with power for the wrong reason was fine.
Also, as edgy as he was at times, he still showed a lot of moments where he cares or acts like a normal person like hugging his pokemon after a victory, smiling or looking after Manon. Problem with a lot of edgy characters is that they're ALL EDGE almost all the time. Pic related. You can have a dark character that still shows concern and gratitude after being saved.
