How many reasons are there to play the main games of each of these generations, instead of the enhanced "third versions"? Any significant storyline changes or any other things I'll be missing out on, besides the lack of some Pokemon exclusive to the main versions?

In emerald you'll be fighting both the villainous teams instead of one trying to stop the other like in ruby and sapphire.

No reason to play the first games of the generation in Crystal, Emerald and Platinum's cases.

Yellow is so-so. All the extra content is anime pandering so it depends on if you like that or not.

Yellow is the only one that truly adds nothing outside of following Pikachu and shifting around the teams for trainers to better match the anime.

Crystal adds in the quest involving Suicune along with animated battle sprites and the Battle Tower.

Emerald adds in the Battle Frontier postgame along with an alternate storyline involving Rayquaza and a couple of exclusive dungeons.

Platinum does the same as Emerald but involves a storyline with Giratina.

And then BW2 has an expanded overworld and much greater options for sidequests and postgame content compared to BW1.
