It's taken this long to bring R/B/Y to 3DS, emulators and roms are free, and there's a lot more of them, and they're easily available.
You're able to trade pokemon through emulators, and something the 3DS port doesn't have, are ways to trade Pokemon from Gen 1 to future games.
and besides, the "mainstream way" to play pokemon, would be to play the original on the GB, not a port.
