Am I the only one who hates this shit? It makes no fucking sense.

For example, I used to browse a forum years ago, and the users decided to organize a tournament, and applied the item clause.

Why? Among the reasons they listed the fact that anyone could slap focus sash on the whole team. No joke.

Most smogon players agree with you which is why item clause doesn't exist in their standard metagame.

I don't like item clause either. It's pointless and limits certain playing styles.

Item Clause might hurt offensive teams more actually. Stall gets shit like Sitrus Berry, Red Card, Black Sludge, Rocky Helmet. Offense is left with the Choice Items, Expert Belt, and the fucking plates. Stall items contribute to the stall playstyle as a whole, but the offensive provide circumstantial boosts.

6 focus sashes is a very legit complaint when it comes to official 3v3 singles and 4v4 doubles. Nobody sets hazards there because the pool of opponent's pokemon that can be affected by them is much lower than in 6v6 singles. Being able to survive any single attack of your opponent is huge when it comes to games that don't last more than a few turns.

item clause forces you to think much more about item decisions on each of your pokemon. it also lets skilled players deduce things (ex. he has smeargle and terrakion, smeargle really likes using focus sash so the terra probably doesn't have it). i don't really play singles but you see how much use the same items get without item clause being enforced.

You're supposed to use your brain and put some thought into teambuilding instead of just picking the best item in the game and slapping it on every Pokemon. Smogonfags spout shit like "B-but many Pokemon would prefer Life Orb", and that's exactly the point. Many Pokemon would prefer Life Orb, but Life Orb is supposed to be a valuable item so you gotta think carefully which Pokemon should have it and which Pokemon should have some alternative like a Choice item. Nothing makes me cringe harder than seeing teams where 4 Pokemon are holding either Life Orb or Leftovers. Thank god the official format has item clause. Besides, it's not like offensive teams are fucked with item clause. If you can't build a functional hyper offensive team with Life Orb, Specs, Band, Scarf, Mega Stone of your choice, Berry of your choice, Focus Sash, Weakness Policy, and a bunch of other stuff in your inventory, then you should really learn how to think outside of Smogon's sets. VGC players seem to be doing just fine even with item clause.
