in any case i think the sheer amount of gems on its tail and hair would make it shine even brighter, not "oh now they're obscured" lol. if there's like 30 of them and they shine just as bright as the single one in the basic form, wouldn't that just make the hair shine? it's still a beacon.
but anyway i think the "can work as a beacon" thing is just one of (regular, non-mega) ampharos qualities. the standing up and learning punching moves and dragon moves is what really makes ampharos interesting to me. it's both sort of silly and cute looking but also kinda menacing and powerful too. which is almost like a contradiction and it's kinda amazing how they made it work. like mareep is such a basic looking pokemon (like a ponyta 2.0 almost), flaafy looks like a girls toy like jigglypuff and clefairy, but then ampharos looks so original and different and yet fits so well with the whole evolution line. it's why i like it so much, i can't really point out exactly what ampharos is. it's a bunch of things. a bunch of themes together to make what is to me (this is only my opinion really) a really good pokemon design.
which is also why i like the mega. anyway i'm repeating myself, i guess i understand where you're coming from and where you're going, i don't really expect you to change your mind of anything but just keep in mind ampharos is more than just "that thing that was on the lighthouse in gsc and the remakes".
