The problems I have with it is that it's really easy and suddenly you get hit with some bad rng and you die. As a result, Jesus (reviving?) seeds became way too centralizing. It was also extremely monotonous to me as well.
It was at least mostly functional, and I'd sit through it if the story really was as good as people said it was, but like I said, 'great' and 'great by pokemon standards' are two very different things. I guess I can see people loving the story if they didn't hear that the story was supposedly good so it beats expectations. Special episodes were actually good however for the most part.
