Pretty sure there was an interview or something where they said they don't want to make another 3D Stadium-like game unless they could innovate it in some way.

Nothing will ever top Pokemon Stadium 2 anyway so I think it's ok. Besides the handheld games are 3D even if they're poorly implemented.
