If they brought this back + the removed legendaries from the main story (oh yeah and revert the exp share or make it split exp back to 100%) i could consider a game post crystal to be good.

The rival being an asshole isn't what made them interesting it was their development throughout the game. Thus why Silver is far more interesting than Blue as he actually had a backstory for why he was an asshole and over the course of the game realized his faults and redeemed himself, learning to bond with and love his Pokemon (how else would he have a Crobat if it didn't love him back).

Blue is just cocky the whole game through, even at the end and into G2/G4.

Blue is way more enjoyable than silver because Silver is a little bitch boy, you have to fight Blue while Blue is the reigning champion which makes shit way better and more satisfying.
