ß is literally just ss. And if you've heard in the anime, it's pronounced Meta-gross, not Metagross, like Metacross, with a g.

Not pronunciation wise. Most people pronounce it Metagross, as if the gross is just cross with a g. How you're supposed to pronounce it is like you're saying gross, like something's disgusting.

The correct pronunciation is however Game Freak decides, because Metagross is a made up word, regardless of its relation to the word gross.

And there is still no difference between the eszett and ss.

Every single person I've met has pronounced it meta + gross.

There isn't an English word to my knowledge that pronounces -gross as anything other than the word gross.

You should not be surprised. English is a Germanic language and the English word "gross" derives from the German word "groß". Thus you have terms like "gross domestic product".

English is a ruthless predator language however that plays the rules fast and loose, making it intellectually superior to other languages.

Actually, both German and English get the word from the Latin 'grossus.'
