Why do people hate the 3D models in this gen with such a passion? Give me one reason why the new 3D models aren't more visually appealing than grandpeople sprites? Pro-tip: You can't.

They're lifeless, sterile, and badly animated. The fact all flying Pokemon just float in an awkward flying position in ALL battles is just lazy.

Also the animations are lifeless and bland, compare them to Black/White's sprites or Stadium/Revolution's 3D animations.

Hell, even in game the textures look like shit compared to the 3D Pokedex one's which are far less saturated looking with much more detail.

Also the game runs like shit despite having only a few models on screen because Game Freak can't optimize. The fact in game battles don't run full 3D at 60 FPS considering how little actually goes on in them is an embarrassment. And don't say it's the 3DS' fault, it can run Kirby Triple Deluxe and Super Smash Bros in full 3D at 60 FPS and look great, Game Freak is a major studio that had shitloads of budget and early access to the 3DS' tech before other developers as confirmed by Nintendo. There is no excuse for how horrible X/Y/ORAS run.

the thing is that the sprites had move color and that made them look more alive

i honestly don't find it to be a big problem at all, its not like its an unplayable piece of shit, i enjoy the way battles looks in 3d and that was the thing that got me hyped upon x/y reveal also remember this is the first gen gamefreak works with full 3d models

however, if they just recycle the animations/colors for gen 7 i will be fucking mad

What bothers me isn't the fact that it is flying, it is actually pretty accurate, what bothers me is the fact that Gamefreak could've just as easily made a model where it stays on the ground, but instead they decided to create this abomination because every flying type should aways be flying for some reason.

kirby and smash's models are approx 5x less detailed and as such are much much easier for the GPU to render
though i agree a lot of them look like shit from a design perspective, the 3d models are extremely detailed and the textures are extremely high quality (from a pixels per area sense)
from a programming aspect, its going to be extremely challenging to get pokemon to run 60 fps 3d in the future because the 3ds has very limited processing power and the models are console quality (try exporting them and viewing them in any 3d modeling program and this becomes extremely obvious)

i still am not a big fan of the models, they could have been done much better. most of them look terrible but its quite obvious nintendo did it the way they did so they dont have to remodel pokemon again. they can do minor updates and coloring changes and stuff but the next gen handheld console is going to be using these sames models and rendering them much much smoother. this is just a transitional phase. i just get really annoyed when the "smash runs fine in 3d" arguement comes up because the models are so fucking tiny comparatively. sure smash looks more polished but that has nothing to do with the games coding, it just has a better art style

This is what Optimization is, and what Game Freak should've done, but didn't. Especially considering the overworld looks like shit and can't even do 3D. There is no excuse for an incredibly successful studio not to be able to get it running properly.

Or just keep the models lower polycount to begin with. Or find other areas to optimize in. There's plenty they could do. Though these guys are paid programmers, it's their job to get things running proper on systems, not mine.

Is it really that bad? You can see them in Collosseum, and hell even Pokemon Stadium. Low poly models can still look great. Hey, the low poly models would allow them to get actual textures and shaders instead of the shit ones they have now, that'd make them look even better than they do now. Don't forget the full 3D and 60 FPS and yes, the game would look better for it.

I don't even know where you pulled these out considering I never mentioned the N3DS. Doesn't change the fact many previous games ran 60 FPS in full 3D on the OG 3DS, and that Game Freak was one of the first devs to get familiar with the Hardware.

Or they could replace the ones they have with others that can do their job better. Or get another company to do it, like HAL, which has done Pokemon before anyways, and has always been good with programming.

Regardless it's not like we'll actually see much in terms of price inflation because of any work on their side. Unless it's a budget title the price was always gonna be $40, or $50 if they're feeling particularly Jewish, like Atlus has been lately with their 3DS games.

There have been 3D games that looked *fantastic*, but Gen 6 seems very rushed. There are tons of pokemon that look stiff as cardboard while others look fine. Miltank has tons of personality, even if it's at the cost of those disturbing wiggling nipples, but then you have Serperior who hardly moves at all, despite looking very dynamic. Contrast with the Sableye animations from Colosseum where it skitters around and looks all twitchy. They were just incredibly lazy with the animations in these games. As others have pointed out, the model textures look incredibly washed out and pale when we're used to pokemon being very colorful and bright. Some suffer more than others, but they all look a little too faded for most tastes.

I'm really hoping that the whole issue of animations being spotty is because they had to build all the models from scratch for the first time for 720 pokemon, and maybe when the next game comes out we'll find out they've spent a lot of time fixing the animations and making them look nicer, but it's not a lot of hope honestly. At this point, though, they have all the resources, so it wouldn't kill them to put some more effort into the motion so the pokemon look more alive and vibrant, instead of moving like a cheap wind up toy.

Like in Stadium, where they would occasionally do the animation that they did when they got relweased from the ball. That really made a big difference.

But I guess that's too much work for Lazyfreak, seeing how they couldn't even be arsed to give the handful of flying pokemon a sprite where they fly/sit on the ground instead of retardedly gliding in place.

I see a lot of anons saying that the models themselves aren't the issue, but rather their texturing, but a lot of the new models have tons of issues with proportions. If you guys look at Steelix, Blastoise and Cofagrigus, just to name a few, and compare them to their sprite representations, you'll see they made their heads a lot smaller for the model. There's probably some performance related reason for why they thought it was a good idea, but it just makes them look, for lack of a better word, retarded.

but that's different, in gen 1 the proportions were very skewed because of technological limitations and because the pokemon designs themselves weren't very fleshed out (Kangaskhan, Nidoqueen and Rhydon looked exactly the same) but now, the pokemon desoigns are mostly fleshed out and the sprites and models follow the official art closely except for arbitrary changes in proportions.

They excelled at using sprites so making an imperfect jump to 3D was expected and X&Y was s good enough first try, again, especially with what they are working with.

The 3D doesn't translate well in the style the how the main games are designed. Sprites make the games feel more full. Generation 5 is probably the best animation style for these type of games.

Crystal animations may be rough, but are still better than awkward squeeze/stretch/rotate pixel mess from BW.

I don't get all the hate on 3D models. Of course there are some bad and stiff ones (namely Xatu) plus the issue with fps drop, but overall they are interesting to watch.
If GF is going to upgrade them in next games that's something to look forward to.

Another thing that is indirecty bad with the models is the fram rate drops. I mean, why is this happening. I thought they would fix their shit in ORAS, but lo and behold, the games are still riddled with framedrops and that is a major annoyance when it happens over and over and over again. Especially when the screen is split in two, focusing on each pokémon. Why is this even in the game, when it could have been dropped for the better?

I don't care how much content and shit Z or whatever is packed with, if they don't fix the framerate drops that annoy me every time they occur I certainly won't be buying it.

They thought their "first effort" work was good enough to be put out for sale, and it'll be judged accordingly. Not with "it's their first effort guys be kind". 3D technology and the 3DS have been out for years. If they couldn't do 3D properly then they should've either stuck to 2D or get a different company to do the 3D for them, like with the 3D console games.

Besides, they're a rich as fuck game company that has been around for years. These aren't no fucking NEETs in a basement making a passion project on a shoestring budget, or a brand new company trying to make a name for themselves. It's the people behind the second biggest and most lucrative video game franchise of all time.

If anything, they fixed Haxorus' proportions. Its legs were so tiny and thin in the sugi art, and it's neck was too long.
