Why did gamefreak decide to release Red, Blue and Yellow instead of the vastly superior versions of Kanto games (Firered, Leafgreen)?

Because VC is meant for super older games and there aren't GBA games on 3DS virtual console. Also people have a larger nostalgia attachment to the originals.
