it'd be great if they make viable counterparts and ALSO tweak old ones to fight on better footing. Like you know, updating their BST at least to match the increasing BST of the new ones as evidenced on the thread.

BST isn't everything but it at least helps a bit especially when the older mons' abilities are already set in stone

Swellow's stats are minmaxed like crazy though. It was ranked in one of Smogon's precious viability threads for a while because it hit harder than Talonflame and faster than Staraptor.

Swellow was a good glass cannon in ADV and was used as an alternative to Staraptor if you need speed instead of power to clean. Thanks to Guts, it hit harder than Crobat without being locked.

Fire has a high base stat to counteract the abundance water and ground pokemon. With those extra points usually going into speed so it isn't a sitting duck.

A theory is that early generations of pokemon didn't design Pokemon and their stats based on competitive viability. GF designed pokemon based on ingame playthroughs

>Early bugs like Beedrill and Butterfree had mediocre stats compared to other fully evolved pokemon, because they were meant to be accessible very early (level 10) and be useful against the first stage pokemon you'd fight in early game

>Compared to other psychic types in gen 1, mr. mime is frail as fuck. GF created its stats with the fact in mind that it would get boosted experience and grow faster, thus balancing out its short comings

these are three specific examples, also the obvious fact that stronger pokemon appear the further you progress in the game implies that GF thought players would replace their team with stronger members as they got more badges.

tl;dr pokemon aren't meant to be equal, however GF seems to be attempting to create a compromise these days by giving early mons like diggersby and talonflame good hidden abilities

I guess it's because the idea of "plants" is lame to most people, especially kids who are the majority of the fanbase. I love Grass-types though and I appreciate them for who they are.

That always seemed pretty obvious, at least in gen 1. Rmemeber the Pokemon formula wasn't really formed yet, so it was designed more like a traditional RPG. You had your starting party member, and as you progressed you got better party members, or weapons, if you think of Pokemon as that in-game. It's obvious the early route shitmons were expected to be replaced by the player later on.

It's the principle of the situation, not the semantics. The boss type naturally counters the starting types, not their movepools.

Blastoise doesn't learn ice beam through level up, but it can learn ice beam like any other water type which does give it an inherent advantage, however knowledge of this fact would not be intuitive to kids playing against lance the first time.
