The buildings in Lively Town look like the belong in Find Mii, and many of the color palettes of pokemon clash terribly with their surroundings.
They arent bad, just out of place. It feels as if who ever managed the over world areas of the game was aiming for a very childish aesthetic, which is a shame because the past Mystery Dungeon games are so unique and bold looking.
The dungeons however look amazing. The 3D environments serve the mystery dungeon formula well. Theres a real sense of satisfactory when you psybeam an enemy from far away, or use roar to send enemies flying.
If you enjoyed the charming portraits in the 2D games, you'll probably have a huge issue with the way a majority of them look in super.
Again, this isnt a gripe about pixel art. It simply feels like not as much love went into the design side of Super compared to the visually masterful games that came before it. There was a real sense of detail and care put into the visual and world building aspects of previous games, seeing a mystery dungeon game fall short in those departments is shocking to say the last.
Its a good game with a lot of improvements, though the improvements would be much more fulfilling in a game with as much care and detail put into it as Explores of Sky.
All of these flaws would be so much easier to forgive if not for the fact that this was advertised as the "DEFINITIVE MYSTERY DUNGEON GAME"
If you can get past all of this, Super is a great game. Especially if its your first mystery dungeon game.
