Jokes aside it's not bad honestly. Just disappointing.
But yeah alternate universes are canon but maybe only some prior to Gen 6. In some cases Mega Evolution probably just wasn't discovered yet.
RSE and ORAS are definitely alternate universes.

if parallel universes is how they explain megas, how do they explain post gen pokemon in pre gen games?
I.e. Gen 3 pokemon in FireRed, even though it's supposed to take place during gen 1 when those pokemon weren't around
