Charmander by comparison either needs lots of grindings early on before gym 1, or you need to train up a Nidoran to double kick or Butterfree to confusion.
Squirtle needs grinding to beat gym 2 or you need to get a bellsprout/oddish and grind it up so it has a chance against Starmie.
To use anything other then Bulbasaur required the player to actually have a good team spread, or a lot of solo grinding the starter.
I can see why back in 90's so many casuals gave up pokemon after the first gym, they are much more casual friendly these days.
