swampert (had ice beam, surf, earthquake)
gardevoir (gave her thunderbolt, had no elec type. you could get manectric or pikachu if you want.)
breloom (had brick break and giga drain)
swellow (i used him up until the E4, but i switched him with rayquaza who i caught before the E4)
camerupt
some dark type (recommend sharpedo)

Also, for the hm slaves

Get Emerald 386, it adds tons of wild pokemon and changes trade evos into level-up evos so you can get all the pokemon on your emulated version. The added variety also makes it much more fun.

I couldn't stand using shroomish for even 5 levels and my starter was based Treeko, who had been a grovyle since level 14, so why would I ever need another grass type?

Slaking, Breloom, Camerupt and Grumpig worked pretty well for me. And a bit later in the game, you could get a Milotic and a Salamence.

Tried this crappy game. Walked into Birch's lab and went up the steps before I got my starter. Got into a random encounter with a Bulbasaur and the game crashed.

Is there a ROM hack in existence that doesn't include shitty dialogue, self-inserts, or new glitches?

I used Breloom, but I skipped Gen 3 and didn't play Emerald until a couple of years ago. I liked Breloom because I used him competitively. Even waited to evolve him in Emerald so he could learn Spore.

It was not fun.

I don't see problem with Ninjask, but Shedinja and Wobbuffet are pure stall for the main game, and Chinchou isn't even evolved, weird.
