The fact that you are shit aside, it gets old. There was nothing on his character most of the time if there was no girl: Just the older guy that makes food for the humans and pokemon.
Don't get me wrong, I liked him at first, but later on it was boring and just meh.
On the other hand, now they kinda do this with Bonnie, asking girls to be the waifus of his brother. The difference? They don't do it almost every episode, which is a relief.
tl;dr overused joke gets boring and now is better handled.
