They may or may not have had the best designs or plot, but they had the PERFECT storm of music, artstyle, iconic and memorable pokemon, with simple controls and story goals. We'd have the gameboy color, I'd sit in my living room couch with a charger hooked up, and played for hours.
There's no other distractions, you'd pick your gameboy, turn it on, and immediately play the game. There's no other apps or second screens, you'd dive right into this magical world and get lost it in. Then you had the explosion of the anime and card game coming out around the same time, where all your friends in grade school would talk about it. There weren't phones to interfere, you all had gameboys. We're truly blessed to be born in such a time (and to have been young enough to get that magical feeling).
