Oh man there's a few. Getting Porygon2 in Sky because that was the final pokemon i needed, beating Rayquaza in Red with my power on red and no charger on hand, and beating Purity Forest.

Ultimately though, the best moment has to be beating Destiny Tower. This was before I knew about Drifblim, and after several attempts, I finally did it. I still remember how I felt when I hit floor 96 and looked in my inventory to see 4 Pure Seeds.

For bad moments there's the time a golem at the end of Buried Relic ate all my reviver seeds and killed me

Anyone who misses the old system clearly hasn't had to deal with trying to get a Pokemon with a 10 spawn rate in a 40+ floor dugeon packing a recruit rate of 0.5.

The fact Chansey has a 16.9% recruit rate AT BEST (No fucking way are you going to be level 91) with a less than 1% recruit rate, on floor 50, that's horseshit right there.

Yeah I kinda felt that way as well but Fennekin covered me a lot with his Psybeam. And I also would spam Growth every time I saw enemies from afar. But bosses were kinda annoying overall. Funnily enough the dungeon that gave me the most trouble was the one you go with Beeheyem despite it being mostly water types, fuck those Hydro Pump spammers.

I think the main reason why I succeeded was because I never didn't have reviver seeds. Oblivion Wing doesn't matter for shit when I still have like 6 of the damn things. I spent a whole 3 gold bars near the end to make certain I never ran out in the final chapters.

All the Snivy Fennekin in the world was already posted so you can just have one of my extensive smugleaf folder.

I still haven't spent a single gold bar. I think I have like 74 after just beating the epilogue. As for reviver seeds I think I have like 12 or less. I wasted a lot of them stupidly by doing expeditions above my level or simply doing stupid shit like using Muddy Water with two partners around. On and I would always revive faggots like Nuzleaf because I thought that was necessary.

Well at least on pixiv there isn't much, and only a few ones are actually good.

Fennekin is quite popular, but Snivy doesn't seem that much.

If I ever see Gates in the bargain bin and get it, I'd probably do Oshawott/Snivy, but I wanted a Gen 6 partner. I actually got recommended Froakie but thought Fennekin would fit the personality I've heard about (and it does, firefox is just too cute). If I replay the game and choose my partner independent of the quiz I'll probably do Froakie with a Chespin partner just because Chespin also seems perfect for the role.

My only complaint is Snivy is a bit bland in expressions. I keep thinking of that autism Snivy that got spammed on /vp/ for a while, he doesn't have a strong reaction to anything.

As for connecting with shopkeepers, that seems to be totally arbitrary. I was able to connect with Meowth after just talking to him once after the postgame, but Kecleon took me roughly 20 missions to connect.

Sky Peak's Secret Bazaars. Pricey, but if you do the "sell lost loot and steal it back in Star Cave trick" you'll have plenty of money.

Just note that you need Nature gifter for this. Outside Bazaars, take Golden Chamber missions, one will eventually have a golden seed. Eat this, but ONLY WITH NATURE GIFTER. If you're level grinding, you'll want this.

Why Star Cave? Kecleon Shops are frequent in it. You can't recruit Kecleon there, though, so it's best for selling high value items and stealing them back, to sell them at another shop later on for even more money

I for one didn't like either way of recruiting. There comes a point where "actually having to work for it" gets to be too much for no particularly good reason (case in point, bullshit like Chansey or anything else in the Joyous Tower)
Meanwhile, the Connection Orb cuts down the number of unique missions to something under 500, which for a game like this is inexcusable.
"Okay cool, I helped out this Whiscash- and i guess i get charizard and alakazam and tyranitar too sure okay"

I'd love to see PMD have something like Inazuma Eleven where the connection map thing is there for some people, but for the rest you gotta search for them yourself.

That's another one of my gripes with SMD is that the locations of some of the Orb missions seemed totally arbitrary. Like they were in places that you'd normally never see that Pokemon (like Dragalge in Cape of Wonders).

At about 500/720 mons right now. I feel like now that I have nearly fully roided out self and partner that the rest will be easy, especially once I get the looplet that makes hunger no longer an issue so I can cheese things with a ghost mon.

Good game. Very little replayability from what I can see after 720. The game would have been better if instead of just unlocking the dungeons with explorer rank for legendaries, you unlocked actual story missions, with the story leading up to Arceus instead of just the mons.

Still, apart from the length of the game, it's probably my favorite mystery dungeon game.

Definitely satisfied with the purchase, though. It's not like it's incredibly short, just that it lacks the same kind of insane grind as the previous installments. I don't think that's a bad thing, just that a lot people enjoy that kind of challenge (hence the arguments over recruitment systems in-thread). The other complaint I'd have is just that the post-game story is nothing like the others, which I'd say is a negative. Still for $40 I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it, and after beating it I plan on regifting it for a birthday present in a few months so it can gain even more use.

Humie and the Mew probably blessed the water or some shit and started curing legendaries who just wanted to blow the fuck out of the anomaly or something. Later realizing that blowing the fuck out of Dark Matter just delayed the fact that they were all fucked, they probably set up some convoluted plan, did time bullshit and wiped their memories twice, and made certain they wouldn't be able to blow the fuck out the Dark Matter later on.

When and where the reincarnations would manifest, the scarves being made so that two stupid kids didn't get curbstomped by Satan, and all the engraving and traditions set up so that nobody fucks with the water until they forced the heroes to be there. Nobody would be able to read the text but the Mew incarnation, and it probably wasn't just any human that could break the seal to the water. Main two gripes are the pacing and the use of characters. I can tolerate a slow start, but they make you spend so much time with the school kids and then effectively remove them from the story once you're 40% in and then ask you to get attached to a new bunch of characters right afterwards. At least the characters you spend time with in Gates during its slow start remain relevant throughout the entire story.

Gates and Super had a much better reason for having the PC be there. In Super, it was literally the partner's story. Really might as well have made the partner the playable one if it was going to double down so hard on him.

This is where you fight ACT in cutscene and meet Ninetales.

You fight Articuno in Frosty Grotto, second half of previous dungeon.

In the connection orb. Secret base missions use the happy portrait, most others use the pained one.

I think they are? There's not much plot; although I am not sure how exactly some dungeons are unlocked. Some probably after you do enough missions, some maybe after reaching high enough rank, some are linked to previous dungeon. I have some plans on making a mini guide on this game; I have some information already.

The names are like in the normal versions; eg. すいとる is Absorb and ばくれつのタネ is Blast Seed.

The Wigglytuff guild was genuinely awful outside of the episodes. The vocal tics were bad enough, but the real kicker is that they take up so much of the plot while doing pretty much nothing.

Super's problem is that the characters may have been decent all round, but were used terribly. As people have said, the school kids were enjoyable, but writing them off at the almost half way point rendered all that time and development completely pointless. Also, putting so much focus on the partner was pretty questionable. The player character in Super pretty much became The Wigglytuff Guild in a single character - so much time spent with them, but they barely influence the story at all.

I was kinda disappointed but it was still effective.

The pacing was really off.
The school was a huge waste of time, only Espurr mattered. Nuzleaf wasn't interesting enough to justify all the time on him, and his betrayal was really lame compared to Dusknoir
The motivation is lame. Instead of being driven by rational self interest and having a significant presence before the betrayal, he's just mind controlled like the Beheeyem.
And that one plot device is really lame. How can you break free of Dark Matter's control like that one Beheeyem? The conditions for him being able to control you are really wishy washy. I don't understand why, say, Espurr wasn't controlled.

I don't get why they needed the convoluted plot to steal the Luminous Water when they could have just petrified the MC straight away and stopped the story then. Dark Matter had only previously been stopped by MC+Mew so he should have been safe afterwards.

The crashing into the sun thing seems pointless, is everyone on the planet being dead not enough?

Also, the voidlands seem to exist only because
-there was a refugee section in the other Mystery Dungeons
-we need the plot to keep moving.
Maybe I'm forgetting something because I played Sky long ago, but I don't remember it being this flawed.
The biggest problem I remember with that game is a flashback to what happened 5 minutes ago every 5 minutes.

On the other hand, the production values are pretty fantastic. The music is incredible and lends a lot of weight to the different scenes, and the animation (which otherwise may be rather simple) can really make them exciting.
The characterization is the strongest in the series, thanks to all the time spent in school and the society. There's no episodes like for sky's chars though.
And the extra twist on the ending was a real twist of the knife, a clever spin on a series cliche - even if the justification was kinda weak.

I've not played postgame.

I think the whole Mind control/possession stuff could have been good if they went all out with it. Given there's supposedly darkness in everyone and Dark Matter controls people through their own darkness, anyone and everyone could theoretically be possessed at any time. Just run that whole paranoia thing to hell and back. It'd be creepy as fuck if the partner suddenly turned on you for a short while, for example. Otherwise, just have people act on their own accord.

Can someone explain Mystery Dungeon games to me?
I just started playing Gates and holy shit am I bored.
I enjoy rpgs but theres so much meaningless text that seems fluffed out for no reason, then you finally get to the gameplay its just randomly generated corridors with nothing inside but other pokemon.

I really want to enjoy this games, can someone explain the appeal to me?

Gates is the worst of them gameplaywise.

The other games (Rescue Team, Explorers, Super) all have a bunch of additional mechanics that make exploring the dungeons challenging and enjoyable.

That one is considered one of the worst for good reason.
The Mystery Dungeon genre is supposed to be about challenging rng dungeons that will force the player to use many resources or repeatedly grind. Exp is forever; All else is disposable. Super does this well.

There's blue and sky in OP if you want to check those out. If you have a problem with padded writing then go for blue, but sky has IMO the best gameplay and story in the series.

I'd say so, since I also don't think the gameplay is nearly as bad as people make it out to be. I didn't really enjoy the gameplay less than the DS games during the main story since I felt stuff like the move levelling, paradise and v-wave kind of made up for the lack of IQ and hunger. Just don't expect much of a post game.

Thinking back on the games, I'm almost tempted to call Gates my favourite PMD since I never bothered much with the post story, hence the lack of content never bothered me much anyway. Super's gameplay seems to be the best in the series, but I really didn't like the story.

IQ was ridiculously grindy. Good system in theory, it just takes way too long to really open up, and by that point I was bored of the core gameplay. Emeras were pretty cool though. A bit too RNG based maybe, but it's rng I can react and plan ahead to unlike stuff like grudge traps and monster houses which just screw you sideways if you don't have the right items.

Datamined what? The only things really of interest I can think of is the debug menu content that can't really be easily accessed. It also has to do with the fact that FE Fates only uses well documented standard 3DS file formats while PSMD uses a new and different version of the archive files that only the Mystery dungeon games use.

I'd rather have DLC adding special episodes like in EotS. WIth the amount of characters now and the whole PSMD encompassing the entire world thing you'd have a lot of material to work with.
For example
1) Special episodes DLC 1: centered about each of the Expedition Society members, aybe some other NPCs introduced now
2) Special episodes DLC 2: "where are they now" episodes about what happened to characters from the older games in between their respective game's plot and now. Maybe more clues about what happened to the past MCs
