Tbqh honest, never really understood the water complaints. You don't get to the ocean until after the 6th gym, and Lilycove to Mossdeep is a straight line. Sootopolis isn't hard to find, and nor is Ever Grande. ORAS even gives you a persistent minimap and Sharpedo surfing to make it faster. Only annoying thing is needing surf, waterfall and dive, but that's nothing a Maril can't handle.

You mean Gold and Silver. Johto's awful new Pokemon, horrible overworld, HM abuse and piss poor level scaling far outweigh excessive surfing.

Though to be honest HGSS are probably worse thanks to gen 4's slow-as-molasses engine.
