emeras usually do more than the looplets themselves
attack x/attack y on a normal looplet is more potent than atk/spa looplets by a large margin, and snorting for stat boosts is incredibly strong for longer dungeons

Water Looplet because it's Pierce Hurler: The Item.
For ones that aren't treasures, the Excavation Looplet and also the Resilient Looplet, especially if you're a fan of moves like Draco Meteor or Superpower.

I was caught completely offguard because I was so paranoid about spoilers before buying the game and saw some master ruser saying Simipour was the villain in an completely unrelated thread (everything PMD was filtered here). Some uninterested-in-PMD friend googled it for me without me asking after I told him that and he said he couldn't find anything but I still wasn't sure because the game was somewhat recent and it could be just scarce info.

Glad it was wrong. It felt good to be fooled so hard in-game. Even better because I revived that faggot like twice in the previous dungeon even though he was a dead weight.

In Sky, I remember there's a scene where the player sees Dusknoir smiling when the player tells him they're a human.

There's nothing to prepare for it in this game, though. It really does come the fuck out of nowhere, but as soon as it happens a lot of things begin to click, like the trips he makes, krookodile easily getting past him on the mountain pass, his trip to lively town to keep a monitor on you and probably getting in touch with krookodile, etc. Its done pretty well, actually.

Always bring an Orb that can inflict some sort of Stun attack, such as a Petrify Orb. Sleep works too, but that's a bit risky. Also, make sure you have a good 3, 4 Apples, as you'd want to use Alliances a lot. You can probably figure out the rest.

I don't remember why dusknoir did the shit he did. The primal depreciation of Dialga seems related to Dark Matter but the temporal apocalypse directly opposes it. It's obvious that a planet which is fixated to a specific point because time fucking stopped wouldn't have the chance to plummet into the sun because the future was a thing at all. The next Bittercold had nearly reached fruition by that time but if there's no life then there's no suffering. It was the only way for the world to stop spinning, but not fall into the sun.

Dusknoir just didn't want to disappear from history, but we don't know his exact origins and he is related to nuzleaf/yveltal in that he came under Primal Dialga's power. PD himself seems to just be Dialga who is possibly corrupted with Dark Matter

I can't help but wonder to the implication that Arceus dictated the whole plot of Sky made at the end of one of the special episodes. Since the planet was frozen in time, DM nor BC could do their shit, maybe Arceus meant for this to happen and knew it would eventually be reversed.

In the end, it's Pokemon, there's no way they planned all this out, but it does seem like they all take place on the same planet, so it brings up some interesting theories.

Super Mystery Dungeon is a great return to form for the series but there's still a lot of missed potential and the story is pretty clumsy.

I didn't like all the gameplay changes in super. Some things like wands make boss fights trivial and I'm not sure how to feel about the connection orb system.

Sky's story is pretty great after you have the special episodes to flesh out the characters. At least Super did that well.

Connection orb should have been implemented with normal means of recruitment and also infinite number of jobs, yes. And evolution should have provided something, they tease you with the massive HP boost when you evolve during the Entei, Yveltal and Dark Matter fights. There were genders, though.

Still, these flaws can be overlooked to some extent and I feel at ease calling this the best game in the series.

Anyway...

So I just got my partner back after getting my ass handed to me through that fucking dungeon, and I brought Salamence and terrakion with me. My partner didn't level up at all, and I'm severely underlevelled for the rest of the post game. Anybody have tips on where to grind for levels/materials, or do I just go through pelipper island a lot?

Can we talk about how terrible the first mystery dungeon game was? The game play was ridiculously unbalanced (multi hit moves were broken, dungeons went on far too long, revive seeds and other utility items were too rare) and the story and characters were terrible, especially compared to the later games. Im surprised the first game was successful enough for sequels.

While I did like the story, it would have been better if Dark Matter and what it was had been established earlier and also more interaction with Yveltal or pawns of Dark Matter before the literal peniultimate dungeon. It also would have helped if they took breaks in the run between Revelation Mountain and, well, the final boss, where you could go on explorations and such. Then again that's what killed the flow right after you reach Lively Town, but eh.

As it is I'm happy with it and the game did ensnare me in a few of it's traps.

Dark Matter's lackeys need some clear motivation. Dusknoir was a good villain because he was well established as a character and his motivation was something anyone can understand. He didn't want to die. As a human faced lackey to Primal Dialga, a simple pure evil type, he's perfect.

I think there needed to be some clear restrictions on what would enable Dark Matter to be able to control you. Right now it's just "if you have darkness, he can control you" - but that's so broad, it opens plotholes and destroys opportunities for motivation. It should have been some kind of manipulation, where he can act indirectly through whatever negativity you have.
With all the development devoted to Nuzleaf it's a real waste to simply have him be controlled rather than have Dark Matter trying to influence him through some kind of dark secret set up in all that time. Why not do the same with Espurr to make the whole double agent thing more tense, so it didn't have to end with a "jk lol"? It'd be way more relatable and it'd be more compelling.

I don't mind the pacing after Revelation Mountain, because Sky used that model and it worked fine there. I wish some of those dungeons were meatier though, Tree of Life is an absolute waste.

How about this for a hypothetical restriction: the power drives a Pokemon to despair by having them hallucinate their Pokemon friends leave them, then making them swear fealty to the powers owner. Gates did have that scene with Kyurem murdering Hydreigon and brutalizing the player in the desert. So it wouldn't be out of the question

I think Super would have really benefited from a re-write. I can't whine too much though, the gameplay was a step up from the other ones, and unlike the other games, I'm enjoying the post-story.

The story was undoubtedly interesting, though not in a good way for many people.

This game had very good scenes and moments, but it doesn't have a strong string thing it altogether. Overall it probably has the strongest moments of any PMD game, and I know kids who play it will be overwhelmed and definitely remember it as a great game (mostly cuz I and a lot of others felt that way just by playing the original PMD as children, which doesn't offer half the experience this game does). As for adults, I think the people who skipped Gates will like Super better. That's just my intuition speaking, though.

It's also due to the general syndrome that occurs everytime a new installment to a series arrives - people often will praise it heavily at first, then nitpick, then start supporting the last entry by reasoning that "well, game W was bad at X, but it did Y better than Z" To look at this board alone, BW2 was liked a lot more after XY came out, and the general consensus of XY increased somewhat after ORAS.

Hydreigon manifests on Gates. If the rest is alive it's impossible (unless you start making assumptions) that the current MC is the same MC as in gates. What is plausible is that it can see through the MC, but not that it knows the MC per-se. Thing is, for all of the characters to still be alive, the events of the previous games must've happened in a reasonable time-frame.

It's really why I preferred the Bittercold to Dark Matter. Sure on their own, Dark Matter's more intimidating, but the Bittercold and what it represented fit them theme of the story. There was no negativity crisis at all in Super, so it didn't fit at all. Really might as well made it a Lavos knock off, with getting energy from petrified pokemon be an end goal in and of itself. I think the Gates partner got shafted the hardness since all his efforts in Paradise to keep people happier and to stop the Bittercold returning was all ruined by another negativity entity showing up that doesn't need an abnormal about of unhappiness to exist.

I'd say between the two games lies a great story.

For level, you just go to Mysterious Geoglyph and stay on the last floor for as long as possible using someone with a room hit move, preferably Heat Wave since it will typically 1hit Genesects. Level, however, is pretty inconsequential in this game where stats make up all the difference. Water Looplet from Cobalion, Vitamins, a third party member, and you can be level 3 and take out any legendary worth a damn.

I have the exact same main character and partner and was able to get through there without problems. Just use wands on the scariest pokemon and hide behind archen and nuzleaf if an enemy is threatening; you should still be able to attack enemies with ember although cyndaquil won't be the best ranged pokemon until you can buy the flamethrower TM.

I recommend keeping both ember and flamethrower on Cyndaquil, prioritize using ember when an enemy is two spaces away and flamethrower when its more than two spaces. I'd also recommend giving chikorita both energy ball and razor leaf as well as doing this ensures she almost always can cover you when she is behind you. This set up is worse for type coverage, but also means you have to spend much less time directly infront of enemies.

Fennekin as well. Actually I had a bit of a hard time until I let go of the pre-SMD mentality of hoarding. But Tyranitar/Yveltal were assholes still. But as far as I remember, the only dungeons that gave me some more trouble was the one you go with Beheeyem which I forgot the name because of the Hydro Pumping faggots. I think I soft reset like 8 times because I was unsatisfied with the amount of Reviver Seeds wasted to bullshit.

From what I've been hearing, it's worth a try if you can get the game. Haven't played it myself, but it sounds like it has good story at the cost of flaws like slow text and a limited roster. Some other anon can probably explain better than I.

Gates is flawed like any other PMD game. It's arguably the most flawed one - but it still has redeeming values. Music, some parts of the plot and characters are all up there.
Of course, there's differences between some parts of the gameplay that have annoyed others among with the limited roster.
That is, It's worth playing it as long as you've already played the previous games and really want to get some more PMD.
Feel free to ask for elaboration.

There is no quiz.
The roster is the Snivy/Osha/Tepig/Pika/Axew roster.
I don't think scarves are relevant.
It doesn't speak directly.
Just download it. I couldn't find a physical copy myself.

So I'm sitting outside the final boss at lvl 23 with only a few reviver seeds left.
I can only make it to the part where we create the first crack in not-yami's shell before wiping.

How fucked am I? Is there any way to fix this?

Gameplay is the most different, so different post.
Team skills are a thing, replacing IQ. Team attacks (like alliances) are a thing which is a room attack performed by everyone on your team.
No belly/hunger mechanic except for the most challenging dungeons.
AI is a stepping stone for SMD.
Traps break when you hit them.
There's a rescue limit.
Paradise is a thing. You get to build a town.
Difficulty isn't too bad, overall. It's not too hard, though - but don't take my word for it, I went with Axew which I think is pretty much the way to cheese through the game.
You can use streetpass to get your party revived.
These are the differences I recall the most.

What types should I try to bring? I did this with Hawlucha, Genesect (Chill), and Florges and got rekt by Dialga.

You probably shouldn't be if it's just for those two, it's a field journal of Destiny Tower that Mawile writes while she's traveling with them. I was filled with sick bouts of inspiration while going through it myself and taking her because it felt like it made sense.

I dig shit like how the final floors of Destiny Tower have the same biome as Reverse Mountain.

Was able to beat it at level 24 without using that many revive seeds. You should be fine as long as you get the right gems for the first phase like distant dodger and attack at a range for the entire fight if you picked characters with ranged attacks. If you are a pokemon with only close ranged attacks you might be in trouble as he has attacks that hit both you and your partner at close range.
