The first snow of this winter has begun to fall, after far too long a wait. Slowking and I watch silently as the minuscule white flakes fall from the sky, collecting on the sidewalk below. Silently, I accept Wendy's sideways criticism of my leadership. She's absolutely right. Giovanni had a certain inborn greatness, and though I have tried my hardest to lead as he taught me to lead, I have failed to capture the spirit of his greatness. It is true that Alphea is made mention of in some other mission files, tangent investigations made in response to this. But the mission itself, she would not find. It represented a sort of 'lost chapter' in Rocket's history. Perhaps, if we both had the time, I could make this mission a bit less lost to one other person in our organization.

~The picture was worn and slightly faded, having sat in Archer's wallet unprotected for many a year. Four figures, obviously and unmistakably Rocket's most prolific executives, crowded around a beaten silver-grey 1984 Honda Civic. Petrel and Proton sat on the vehicle's roof, each wearing identical black suits with collared shirts in a darker shade of their trademark coloured hair. In a blue blazer, with pants and a shirt of such a dark grey-green they could have passed for black, was Archer, leaned against the hood of the car. His right arm was wrapped around the waist of Ariana, who wore a black turtleneck and a burgundy skirt. Lit cigarettes hung loosely from the mouths of Archer and Petrel, and the skyline in the background looked nothing like the countryside of Kanto. The four looked considerably younger, especially Archer, whose hair was a much brighter shade of azure than that of the man that stood before Wendy now. Gone too were the weary lines of age on his face, and the slight creep of grey at his temples. Gone was the stress of age in the four Rockets, but what was more, they looked happy. Real, unmistakable, happiness. Flipping the picture over was the date, scribbled in Archer's recognizably messy scrawl, which read "1987, July 1"~

"We took that picture shortly after arriving in England, just before we made the trip into Alphea" I said. "I've carried it with me ever since."

Let us travel now back in time, to that year 1987. Our story begins not with the mission to Alphea, but with another mission.

This mission is a simple one- Saffron's banks have money that Giovanni desires to make his own. Archer, that little azure-haired grunt, made short work of the bank's security, before departing with bags of cash slung over his shoulders. On a whim, he had decided to make a secondary stop in a nearby jewellery shop, to further pad his earnings.

The alarms blared as glass counters were shattered by the eager young thief. Jewels, silver and gold necklaces, diamond rings, all manner of bright and shiny things did Archer shovel into his treasure sacks. Stuffed in a closet and unable to move, were the store's proprietors, tied up with their mouths taped shut.

The cops would be arriving any minute, but our dear little Archer had already made preparations for their arrival.

The young officer would find himself face-to-face with the thief- A young man with azure hair and eyes, wearing a blue jacket over a black shirt and pants. An unlit cigarette hung from the boy's mouth (was he even old enough to be smoking?) and his mirthful grin made him seem oblivious to the fact that he had just committed a string of major crimes. At his side, among the shards of broken glass, were two large sacks, bulging with the contents of the boy's heists.

"Shame" he said, slowly reaching into his jacket pocket for a lighter, setting alight his cigarette. "Here I was, hoping they'd send the whole Saffron PD my way, and I get stuck with some rookie instead."

"Oh well, a show's a show, and the show must go on."

Reaching into his other pocket, Archer produced a vaguely-shaped, small grey box. "I have in my hand a detonator that's remotely connected to about Fifty Voltorbs that I've scattered throughout this establishment" he proclaimed. "You open fire on me, and I blow this store sky-high, along with everyone in it."

'Myself not included, obviously.'

"Now, officer, you've got a choice. You can either keep your pride intact and die in the line of duty; or you can run on back to your department and live for another day, letting me escape in the process."

"What's it going to be, officer Your life, or your pride?"

Archer's smirk widened, further than should have been possible, and his thumb pressed the trigger of the detonator.

The building rocked in the wake of the explosions. Debris fell but thankfully, no one was hurt and a thick cloud of smoke and dust filled the air. When the dust finally settled, the thief was nowhere to be seen, nor were the bags of money and jewels. In their place were a man-sized hole in the floor, and a small black business card emblazoned with a large crimson R.

Ah, the joys of youth. That feeling of invincibility and the rush of adrenaline, such as cannot be replicated.

Now that we have met our protagonist in blue, it's time to meet the remaining heroes of this tale.

Arriving back at base, Archer deposited his stolen loot in the designated location keeping for himself the necklace of silver and ruby before making his return known to the master of the house. Giovanni would be anxious to hear of his most prized charge's success, and for Archer a new mission would almost certainly await him next.

Archer stepped into the room, the soft carpeting muffling his already gentle footsteps. But for all of his wiles, the illustrious redhair was nowhere within to be seen. Instead she found him first.

"Bang." She said, pushing two fingers into his back in emulation of a gun. With equal silence, she had slid into the walk-in closest just behind the door and to launch this faux-ambush. Whether she was there out of coincidence or simply heard him coming was academic.

"Did you? Oh Archer. You know I can be bought, but not cheaply. So I hope you didn't skimp, or next time it'll be for real." The sing song tonality did much to undermine the threat.

To say that she couldn't do so, or wouldn't, would be a falsehood indeed; in those days the organization was still something of an Old Boy's Club. One didn't get the top in such a group without being canny, and if it called for it, ruthless.

Three sparkling rubies, each cut into the shape of a heart, adorned the braided silver wire necklace that hung from Archer's fingers. "I picked this one out just for you. I hope it's to your liking?"

But of course, there's more to the story than that, and no thief worth his salt would simply hand over his loot like that. No, there had to be more to Archer's game than meets the eye. "I just need you to say those magic little words, and it's all yours."

Loot? Well, loot seems to be some pocket change and a few rich people's belongings to be 'processed' indubitably. Ah, Petrel... Even back then, he was still a carefree bastard who probably was a bit too loud for their own good. But he got results, so who's complaining? The beauty mark on his face was present, and that boyish exterior made him a dead ringer for some kind of 'Gorgeous George' of the group to begin with.

Petrel gets a playful punch to his shoulder, making him give one of his goofy chuckles. He clears his throat as he puffs out some smoke away from the group. No need to be a douche. All three members of Archer's team had their suspicions, and if pressed, the bluenette would say that he had the same suspicions. But, orders were orders, and as reckless as the young man could be, he wasn't one to disobey a direct order from Giovanni. Suspicions or not, Giovanni, thy will be done.

"Whether it's a trap or not is, unfortunately, irrelevant. My orders come from Giovanni himself. He wants that treasure, and he wants us to bring it to him. Hopefully, in the course of this mission, we'll be able to figure out who was able to break into our comms, why they were doing so, and most importantly, how they did it. And, if anyone on our end helped them, who's responsible so we can string them up by their thumbs in the basement."

The air in the room was tense. It was obvious that, despite the high-paying reward, none of Archer's team were particularly keen on taking this mission. Vague threats about the thumb-stringing of potential traitors aside, there wasn't much that could be done to ease that feeling in the air. The team was about to dive headfirst into deeper waters than they had ever swam before, and they all knew it.

"Pack as much as you feel you'll need, including clothing and money. We'll be completely on our own once we've landed on English soil, and there's no telling how long we'll be stuck there. Nor, unfortunately, do we have any real leads. I have a few hunches based on the information we've been given, but nothing that's really solid enough to be called a lead."

"I know, it's not a situation any of us want to be in, but we can at least try to make the most of what we've been given."

Petrel strokes his budding purple peach fuzz on his chin. He glances back to Ariana as he seems a bit lost in thought. This sounds too fishy to be really of any worth... Her own silence was added to that of the rest of squad, she looked between the other three for support and ideas.

They had a pretty good track record as far as teams within Rocket went. Proving their worth on an international job could put them on the fast-track to promotion. Ariana had been eying a cushy executive spot for far too long to let that kind of dream slip away, now that a potential opening was being dangled in front of her.

With that said she turned back to him and nodded. The best plan in uncertain times was to have a strong leader to rally around and they had one of the best. If nothing else, the blue-haired one could count on her support and confidence.
