I'll be honest, meeting new pokemon fans and becoming friends with them with the help of this game sounds great. But meeting game/fictional characters is a whole other experience. There are things in games that you can't experience in real life. You can't explore all the unique ruins, routes, and towns, and other places you get from pokemon. You can't find out more lore about the world. You can't stop and listen to the amazingly composed music the series is well known for. And while there are many interesting places in real life, nobody is going to spend the money to travel solely for the sake of this game.
Face it, Pokemon GO just takes two aspect of Pokemon, the battling and catching, and brings it to the real world in a unique, different way. But that's all it is, different. Not definitive.
If you honestly think the mainline games will be obsolete when GO is out, there is really no hope for you. It's ignorant to say people enjoy all the other aspects of Pokemon because they're "filling the blanks".
