The approach of a new dawn had brought with it new chances for good fortune. A good night's sleep would help make the day's task an easier one, with any luck, and after a brief once-over by a local mechanic, the derelict Civic was once again brought to working order. With renewed vigour, the team set off towards the castle.

It was both a beautiful and terrible sight to behold. From the distance, the castle had looked intact, but up close, the ravages of time and flame showed their true colours. What had once been a lush garden was now little more than a blackened stain upon the land, thick with bramble and thorn where once colourful flowers grew. The old gate, once a marvel of stonework and wrought iron, had fallen into disrepair, and the tarnished rubble now blocked the road from further vehicular advance. Beyond the ruins of the old gate stood a pair of towers, stone and wood structures stained black from ash and smoke. The unblemished remains of a garden pond's stonework pagoda, fallen into disrepair but still somewhat colourful, were all that remained of the castle's former splendour.

Archer grimaced, saying as he stepped out of the car "Stay on your guards, everyone. It's probably even worse inside."

Ariana was quick to follow him out of the car. While previously she had high hopes for coming out of this adventure with some extra pocket change, now it was starting to look like that was a forlorn hope. If the outside looked this decrepit, one could only imagine how bad the fires would have scoured the interior.

"What a waste, looks like it must have been a beautiful place in its heyday. Hmph."

She ran a quick inventory of her team while waiting for the others to prepare themselves for the adventure ahead.

I know the drill, so let's go fast. Petrel was doing a last minute check of his team as well. He strokes his amicable chin fuzz as he looks at his trust Meowth to prowl around the thing for extra possible artifacts or items to be used. He pockets that ball, and looks at the dingy, burnt-out castle. If he had the time to admire an immense blot of black on the planet's stupid face, it'd probably be just like home.

"Well hey, maybe no one's bothered to come back in to go looking for stuff. Maybe we'll get lucky!"

He gives a cheery nod, sighing as he rubs his face. Oh Petrel, your optimism is sometimes completely lost. There can't be some kind of jewelry or anything to snag. Maybe some long-since melted gold, but how can he carry that in a sack?

The combined square footage shared between the castle's grounds and inner halls were undoubtedly great, serving once as a measure of the royal family's prestige. But now, black and ruined, they presented an imposing challenge to traverse. As a single unit, any attempt to tackle the grounds would take several days. But, obviously, food was scarce, and the team simply didn't have the luxury of 'several days' to scour the entire compound. Archer mulled this over, stroking his chin in a thoughtful pose as he took stock of his options. How could four men do several days' work in just one day?

Like a calm, warming breeze in the summer wind, the answer that came to the bluenette was a simple and obvious one.

"We'll be able to cover more ground if we split up into teams of two. Petrel, you and I will scour the castle grounds and try to find our way into the dungeons. Ariana, Proton, you two check the upper and lower halls. We'll meet back here at nightfall, hopefully with some clue as to the treasure's location."

Ariana would undoubtedly protest at being stuck with the uncouth loudmouth, but Archer had a sneaking suspicion that this was the better course of action. Why, he could not say. It was just a feeling in his gut.

The idea to split up had crossed her mind more than once, but the choice to not go with the natural pairing had her raising a brow.

"You're splitting us up?" She mimicked, hoping for some kind of explanation for the arrangement. When none was immediately forthcoming, she dismissed it with a shrug.

It wasn't like the two of them had never worked together before, but it made the redhead wonder if Archer didn't trust her to be professional if it were just the two of them. She scowled at the thought.

"Alright, you're the boss. Yell if you get into trouble, it ought to echo like all hell in there." His fellow grunt warned him. But how easily they'd be able to reinforce each other if needed, wasn't very clear. Likely it'd have been a pain to navigate it in the best of times, now it'd be worse with the state of disrepair.

The looming castle entrance beckoned to red and teal. Despite their issues, they would have to learn to work together if they wanted to make it out unharmed, to say nothing of any measure of success they might not find.

The wind on the heights was warm, growing hotter as the sun began its climb towards zenith. It whistled through the branches of the dead and blackened trees that littered the grounds. Behind, blue and purple. Ahead, the darkness of the ruined structure.

He sat in a velvet-cushioned chair, with an infant child in his lap. To his left stood his wife the queen. Garbed in an emerald green dress, with a necklace of pearls and flowing crimson hair, she held in her arms a second infant child. Standing between them was a young boy, the crown prince, who wore a dour grin and an off-white suit, or perhaps it was white, yellowed with age. Impossible to tell at this point.

At any rate, it appeared that no one had yet been through this way since the fire, proving that Rocket's luck still held, for the moment. Ahead, the air seemed less thick with dust. The entrance to a secret passage, perhaps? Or merely an opening in the wall from years of decay?

Even destroyed, the place held a kind of faded elegance. It was easy to see that a talented hand had built this structure, and that a lot of care and funding had went into its construction. It did, in fact, look fit for a king. On the way by she let a gloved finger glance across the stony pillars, the soot that painted them darkened her exploring digit until it had matched the color and texture of charcoal.

The painting had caught her eye in the twinned beams of their flashlights, and she carefully propped it up with the clean hand holding her light so that the two of them could see what it depicted. She clicked her tongue disdainfully

"I almost feel bad for them. They look happy. And rich. Painting alone must have cost more than we make in a month combined."

Ariana let it go after making that remark, time was short and they had to press onward. The scratchiness in her nose began to get less intense as they did, which was as welcome of a relief as anyone could hope for in here.

The massive painting had caught the grunts eye, the sheer beauty of the brushstrokes had caught the emotion of the people in the painting, something that his partner had noticed both in quality and price. Further down the hall was a library... Or, what could be best be described as the remains of one. Scorched pages of books and blackened bindings littered the floor, while a scant few remained on the shelves. The room was expansive, a massive circular enclave with a high ceiling. Charred and collapsing bookshelves reached almost to the top, when they remained standing; many had fallen or collapsed, and their remains too cluttered the floor.

From the center of the room, there were three means of egress spaced at forty-five degree angles from one another, including the hall from which the two had entered. Two Rockets, two paths to explore...

The corridor had lead them to what looked like a library, a place with tall dividing walls of scorched timbers and partially consumed parchments. While lesser in dust, the remains of the past inferno were kicked up by their boots. Ariana had to stop herself from sneezing twice while they scouted it out.

A careful hand reached out to pluck one of the books that had survived the blaze relatively intact from its perch at the edge of a case. She flipped through it with only mild interest.

"Watch your step around these shelves, they look ready to collapse, and heavy enough to knock someone out if they do." She advised. "I'd say this would be a good place to look for clues if it wasn't so badly hit. I doubt much useful information survived."

Well, the painting was safely stored inside Proton's bag of holding, so he knew it was safe and sound for the moment. More possible treasures seemed to appear in the form of books as they walked deeper into the castle ruins. Proton ran his fingers over the spines of the books that were still somewhat left intact, hoping to find anything of value or something that could tell him where to find things of value, either way, he was on the lookout. Your chosen path leads to what appears to be a study, largely and miraculously untouched by the flames. Much smaller than the library, perhaps only the size of a master bedroom, though no less saturated in books. They lined the shelves, dusty, though altogether largely intact. A chair and desk sat abandoned, filthy from dust and age. The air here feels damp, and the musty smell of aged and still water fills the room.

An otherwise inconspicuous study... It would be the perfect place to hide valuable information... Perhaps there are some clues lying about, waiting to be discovered?

Ariana's careful, deliberate search uncovered a variety of nice things. Hidden away in the desk was a journal, bound in black leather and embroidered with gold. The writing on the pages within was that of a strong, bold script, likely from the hand of an adult male. Also within the desk's confines was a silver locket containing a small portrait of the queen in her youth, a large handful of Alphean thousand-Pound notes, and an assortment of gold and silver coins. From the uncovered oddments, it became clear that the duo had stumbled upon the king's personal study.

The tiling under the floor was ever so slightly different from the rest, and so Ariana checked here as well. For her efforts, the castle rewarded her by revealing the location of a hidden passageway. With a loud, rumbling growl, the bookshelf on the far wall depressed itself, before sliding out of sight; the entrance to a secret tunnel had been revealed.

The air down that passage was dank and foul, and there was no light. The thick, musty scent grew stronger, flowing from the hidden passage and threatening to overwhelm delicate sensibilities. In the inky blackness, the faint outline of torches could be seen hanging from the walls, and off in the dark distance, the sound of running water could be heard.

The grunt gave an appreciative whistle as her digging uncovered quite a bit of treasure. In addition to just gold, the journal might prove useful in their quest. Or at least an interesting read. He carefully put all of that into her own backpack, taking caution to insulate the most delicate items in case something were to happen.

The good times continued to roll with the unveiling of a secret passage, which she peeked over the lip of the desk to glance down for as far as their lights would illuminate it. After packing up her stuff, she strode to stand behind Proton at the foot of the passage.

The passage was pitch-black, illuminated only by the beams of light from the duo's torches. The tunnel stretched deep into the mountain upon which the castle was built, and seemed to delve ever deeper with each passing step. The foulness of the stench in the air never seemed to abate, but never did it worsen either.

At last, the descent leveled out, and the light of the two torches revealed the source of the sound of water. The two had stumbled upon an ancient sewer system, carved into the mountain deep in ages passed to bring waste out of the castle. At either side of the water stood a narrow stone walkway, possibly just wide enough for men to travel one-abreast. The tunnel stretched out long in either direction, but the passage to the right seemed to smell less foul than the one to the right. A way out, perhaps?

Eventually this tunnel opened up into another one running parallel, all smoothed stone and narrow ceilings. Her nose crinkled at the added foulness of being so close to the source.

"Guess this is the sewer." She said, and pointed off to the right. "It smells nicer that way, so I'm guessing its either the source or exit to the water. But I guess we should explore the other side first before looking for any secret exits. I sure wouldn't look down here for any treasure maps, maybe they banked on that?"

While not looking forward to it, they had good luck so far. Why break it now?

The sewer continued to stretch for what felt like an eternity, winding, branching off into numerous dead ends, until at last it reached what could best be described as 'the end'. A large circular well, from which ground water poured forth, was revealed to be the source of the sewer muck. Joining it was perhaps a more modern installation, as clear water poured from pipes in the ceiling to join the hazy sludge. And beyond the well, over the water on the far edge, there sat a strange sight.

A long row of stone coffins lined the furthest wall. Was it a crypt built into the sewer? Or, was it the other way around, and the sewer had been dug through the crypt? Either way, the sight of rows of heavy stone coffins sitting on the opposite side of the sewer had to be an unusual one.

Nine tombs in two groups- One of five, one of four, with space for a tenth sitting suspiciously between. Amid the dust, dirt, grime, and cobwebs, it was impossible to tell their age without examining them up-close, but to do that would mean wading through the muck to reach the other side...

The murky sludge was deep, and upon taking his first step, Proton sunk in up to his armpits. Moving did little more than worsen the foul smelling water, but standing still was just as terrible. You eventually make it to the other side, but your new shoes will never be the same again.

The cobwebs are thick, obscuring any useful information that could have been written on the tombs. Crowbar makes quick work of aged stone, and there is little surprise once broken into. The air of the coffins is dusty and thick, though there is no smell. Nestled within each of the nine are skeletons, as one would expect given the age of the structures. Though their skin and clothes have long since deteriorated, their jeweled and gold ornaments remain behind, dusty but whole. But minor burial trinkets are worthless compared to the treasures that lay in wait at the journey's end, and it is the empty tenth plot that holds the real treasure of this find. That's right, it's the door to another hidden passageway!

The air of this tunnel was just as foul and dank as that of all the others, and save for the flicker of light from red and teal's torches, there was no illumination to be spoken of.
