That said, your starter starts not mattering by the time you get to the 3rd gym, thanks to how many mons you have available to you at that point.
It also helps that Surge is practically right next to a cave full of decent ground types.Honestly, looking back, the only Gym leader where your starter really matter is Misty, thanks to the relative lack of good Grass and Electric Pokemon early on. I mean there are grass types near her, but they both are kind of mediocre.
>>24982155Not him, but I always beat Brock with Butterfree. It's hilarious that a mon with a x4 rock weakness can wreck Brock's shit, but it totally can thanks to Brock's mons not using rock moves. Taking into consideration how low their special stats are, Butterfree can easily sweep him with Confusion.
