Since actually releasing Red and Green out of Japan when Blue existed was dumb and might have made them gain LESS money, the readapted Blue for the international release to be Red and Blue. Then, in Japan, they made Pokémon Pikachu Edition, which was supposed to be similar to the anime (see Jessy and James, for example), and they named it Pokémon Yellow outside of Japan. It's not the third version, it's a special version.
