GameFreak has dropped the third version model and is now solely focusing on delivering the maingames and the remakes. Since the main incentive for getting the third versions were either the special Battle Facilities (confirmed no longer supported) and/or extended storylines/Pokedex (easily covered with just a maingame+remakes) it makes no sense to continue pouring the resources into a game that's never going to sell as much as the main pair of games. In order to maximise the profits, each subsequent generation is now going to introduce only a bit more than half a hundred new Pokemon to lessen the pressure on the Pokemon designers, while at the same time allowing GameFreak to churn out more maingames in much shorter intervals.
This is all a part of a broader trend. Nintendo evidently attempts to shorten the life cycle of their consoles/handhelds in order to better compete with the rapidly evolving tablet/smartphone market. Their old console release model became increasingly unviable in the last few years. Soon we might find ourselves in a situation where releasing a third version is no longer possible due to how short the generation cycles have become.
Also, Pokemon Z was originally meant to be released in 2015 but it was cancelled in favor of adopting this new business model.
Prove me wrong.You literally can't
