The white characters are called Furigana. It's Hiragana characters placed above Kanji. It's used to help kids read Kanji, because there's a fuckton to remember. Pokemon is actually a good beginner Japanese game to learn the language because it uses Furigana.
That sideways 6 is a Hiragana character. It represents possession/additive statements. In this case, it says "Fushigi no Danjon" or in English "Mystery Dungeon", the no connects them basically.
The ?? Are design choices. They're there because the kanji together means mystery and the ? is commonly associated with mysteries and the unknown. It would be the same if the US boxart add a ??? Above the word Mystery. I find the JP boxart to be better simply because they do add those little features, like the mega evo icon in the XY boxart.
