it's not that I prefer the newer style, I guess I just never loved the water colors.

Pokemon succeeded for more than just the designs. It was the way you could connect with other people, having to catch them all, the TV anime, the cards etc. It would have been fine.

The Pokemon designs mattered
No one gave a shit if anyone thought Voltorb or Grimer were too simple, because the starters, legendaries, Eevee, Jigglypuff and Pikachu all looked perfect

Also, Digimon was a completely different thing that was more like tomogachis than pokemon so the comparison doesn't really stand. And with the revival of the new movies it's still going strong.

Aside from the mandog these are actually the most likeable youkai designs I've seen so far. The butterfly thing on the right seems pretty decent in fact.
I'm still not sure if I would take any of the others over even ice cream cone, though
