Is mass breeding a game mechanic or it actually exist canon trainers who breed until they get 'perfect genes' and shiny Pokémon?

They do breed, the question is if any canon trainer (in game or in the anime) actually did things such as mass breeding to get stronger genes or shiny looking Pokémon.

Why is breeding even a thing?
I mean take the older games where there's only local battles with your friends.

It seems like a pain to have to raise another pokemon, and for one thats the the same kind since you've used the other one to breed it.
