>>25028017When I first played it, it was a straight improvement over R/B/Y. Visuals, sound, mechanics, everything.
It's still a decent game, but it's got issues.
Crystal is the better version.
It's a straight improvement over Gold/Silver, with just a bunch of neat little polish additions and ever so slightly more story, as would become the norm for third versions.
Red is probably the coolest final boss in any Pokemon though (even if he's no Cynthia in terms of actual Pokemon quality, not even close actually), and just the idea of going to Kanto was great, even if it wasn't implemented as well as it probably should have been.
Go play it. You'll like it.
cloning trick is neat as fuck, but play through the game without doing it the first time, and Crystal's timing to do it is different than in Gold IIRC
>>25028154people overplay it, Kanto's actual problem is the total lack of any level progression when you're in it
but yeah, as far as the game is concerned, Kanto is going through some shit during G/S and they cut out a bunch of things for ROM space reasons (the Safari Zone is closed, Viridian is just a handful of trees now, Cinnibar is
destroyed by a volcano, Cerulean Cave collapsed, etc)
>>25028089last time I played through Gold, the only thing I did was beat every single trainer on the route and didn't run from fights, and I was (almost) acceptably leveled for most of the game
and then I was 10 levels down when fighting Blue, and 20+ levels down when fighting Red, but you can item your way past those fights if you can't be arsed to grind
everything else was relatively no problem, carried stacks of Revive with me though
>>25028287fucking this, Houndoom and Xatu are some of my favorite Gen 2 Pokemon
