I've always thought Megas should just be the same pokemon but with some kind of added "extension" to them. And that extension has to be done in a clever way (example: Lilligant "blooming"). While normal evolutions should show that pokemon "growing" which would show a much more significant change. I've seen a lot of deviant art megas interchange the two which I personally dislike a lot. So I guess this matters to me more than if it matches with Sugimori's art style or design philosophy.
There's a lot of little clever things they added too, like the heartgold symbol on Ho-oh's arison forme.
