My only problem with DPP was that the only worthwhile wild pokemon were rare as fuck. I never even caught Drapion until gen 5 or something.

I fucking hate Sinnoh so I really doubt I'll get it unless the postgame and Megas (or whatever) are god-tier, but I am curious to see if they bother to improve the originals at all.

When I first played Pearl, my final party was Crobat, Golduck, Medicham, and a Bibarel HM slave. There just weren't enough Pokemon for to bother using. Thankfully Platinum fixed that.

That's why I never use early game Psyduck in the Sinnoh games, even in Nuzlockes
Some pokemon like Koffing are ok though

Magmortar has options out of the ass, but you'll need a Magmarizer and a trade to get it.
Houndoom's easier, has a mure useful ability, and I think it's available slightly earlier as well.
I'd go with Houndoom for simplicity and Dark STAB, but either would probably work fine.
