I went back to work on the Wesnoth/Pokemon crossover thing.

Pic related is the current roster for "Team City", "Team Forest" and "Team Slums" (which needs 1 more member). There's also a "Team Mountain", but I don't know what to add to it besides Magmar, Zubat and Bastiodon..

Sprites are from B/W, except for the Gen 6 sprites which are tracings of Sugimori and anime artwork.

Mostly trying to implement the stupid ideas I had back then, like a Pokemon League with a battle for every type. But for most of the game, I'm trying to make it as authentic as possible to a GSC feeling game. I might add more stuff to set it apart as I continue working on it though.

Right, you don't want to use too many different trees, it doesn't look right/is distracting.
Though I would say you could make it less tidy on the right if it's a forest. If it's just a path to a house or something then it's fine.

Crystalfag here, I started working on tht Mt. Coronet cover again and it's almost, almost done. I'm still having trouble with the very end of the song before it loops but I decided to just tough it out and do it by hand so it can finally be finished and I can move on to something else. I wonder if the guy that asked for Mt. Coronet is still here.

Goddamn, I like these maps a ton. I'd criticize the middle map being so large and open (it'd be fine in a later gen but I'm thinking about the 160x144 screen) but if it's the Safari Zone I think it has a chance to work.

Gen 2 has been disassembled and you can mess with the code directly. You need to know some assembly but how much you need depends on what you want to do with the hack (it's really easy to edit Pokémon/moves/types/trainers/routes/graphics and pretty easy to do scripts too, which is most of what you'd want to mess with in a vanilla hack, but you need a bit more knowledge if you want to mess with the engine itself and add new features).

I want to do a Unova song next if I end up procrastinating working on an actual hack again. Does Virbank sound like a cool song to cover? It seems relatively simple to do so it'd be a nice break and I like how chill it is.

That all sounds reasonable, new moves are easy to add (but keep in mind there's only room for three new moves in Crystal so if you want to add more you have to remove some, not that that'd too hard because there are some completely identical moves like Protect/Detect, Mean Look/Spider Web, and Softboiled/Milk Drink, on top of moves nobody ever uses like Psych Up). I think other people have already gotten location and move evolutions to work so you could probably ask around and get that already done, and .gifs are definitely possible, I think there's a tool within the disassembly specifically for compressing multi-frame gifs into Crystal's format, you'd have to again ask around though. There's an IRC chat on the disassembly github, you can go there to ask anything you'd have trouble with. Overall everything you mentioned sounds really manageable for a rookie.

I think it's the fact that people see Essentials as "easier" so it attracts people who don't want to put in as much effort. Good things can potentially come from it, like Sage, but the people that regularly use it aren't going to bring those things.

It's kind of like how there are more shitty Gen 3 hacks than Gen 1 or 2 hacks (unless you look wayyyy back to early 2000s hacks that have all but disappeared from the Internet), not that Gen 3 is worse or anything, and we have a good share of good Gen 3 hacks, but people who don't really want to try see "oh, Gen 3 is easier to use!" and flock there while Gen 1 and 2 have less of that (again, not that you can't find it if you look).

Essentials is like that but much more extreme because of the way it gets actively advertised as "hey, we're super easy to use!"

It also doesn't help that Reborn ended up getting popular and forming a community of tumblrites who started making their own hacks in the vein of it. The seriousedgy[/spoiler:lit] and progressivetumblrtone of Reborn is somehow considered a gold standard among a large chunk of Essentials users. At least Insurgence is trying to tone down the edge and listen to feedback even if I don't care for it.

Gen 4's actually coming along quite well last time I checked, which was about 2 years ago. Map editing was just beginning to make progress, but it's more involved than just tile placement like Gen 3. It's editing 3D environments, and most people probably aren't too into that. Also, there aren't many super fantastic tools, but there are some like PPRE, which are functional, but sometimes glitchy and is unfinished.

I had an Acekard 2i which ended up having contact issues and started fucking up on me. Today I decided just to order an R4 SDHC since I want to play on my 3ds rather than ds lite/i.

I decided to look at my broken flashcarts (dstt, dstti(both seem to be perma-fucked, maybesome sort of anti-fake code) and the acekard) by opening them up to see what's inside. The acekard shell was not made to be opened, so it doesn't stick back together properly. I decided to jam a bit of paper folded over behind the PCB and the back of the cart and shove it in the see if it will work and it actually fucking did. The paper is keeping the sell intact and pushing the pcb against the contacts in my dsi perfectly, I've thrown the ds against my bed and tossed it in the air a few times on it hasn't frozen due to loss of contact. I'm scared of losing it now if I take it out, it is my only way to play pogemons with animation speed ups, light speed text, forgetable Hms and randomized

Thanks. I was kind of hoping /vp/ would help me figure out Team Mountain's roster. That's always the fun part of a game mod:^)

Rules:

>optional mixed attacker
>all of them must make sense in a mountain biome
>all 6 gens must be represented (just replaced the Forest faction's Farfetch'd with Burmy for this reason, RIP)

>no starters or Legendaries (You can choose them as faction leaders, but can't recruit them directly)
>first stage Pokemon only, or ones that can't evolve. this is because Pokemon can gain XP and evolve.

I have Snover already coded, complete with Snow Warning. The problem is that turning surrounding terrain to snow hurts its allies just as much as the enemies. Skiddo's already there too, but in a different faction. I can just move it.

I'll probably replace it with Magmar and give the Gen 4 slot to Shieldon.

I've been messing around with some of the hacking tools, one of them is Advance Text. I've seen videos where people open up the roms and every character text is mapped by town. Get XSE and open person events, etc. in A-map and change their dialogue there. Be sure to repoint if the dialogue you're writing is longer than the original.

Has anyone here done any move animation hacking? I'm doing some research on it, but it keeps branching wherever I go.
I thought Pay day would be a simple move to go after and edit, but as of right now I have found it has 9+ additional branches and I'm starting to get a headache. So far found out that the first 3 branches are for the particles used in the animation, while the fourth branch goes to what I suspect is the animation itself; the 2nd byte seems to affect the rotation, transparency and visibility. while the 4th byte seems to change the size of the pay day coin (less than 40 = small fragment, 40 or higher = Normal coin)
And after this there are tons of other branches. I just can't get my head around it.

Another idea I've played around with in my head but will probably never implement into a game is having the choice of three starters, but they're all normal type. Instead of chosing between which type you want, they'll all be proficient in a specific stat (IE, one has good attack, one has good defence, ect) Later on in the game, based on a choice in the game, you can evolve your starter into a type of your choice, Eevee style. It would mean the creation of several fakemon though. Feel free to steal that idea if you want.

Depends on what you want to do and how vanilla you want your hack to be. It takes next-to-no programming knowledge if you just want to make a custom region with its own Pokémon distribution and trainers and all that jazz, you can even make custom moves (assuming they're all basic and don't have complicated effects) and Fakemon if you want without needing any programming knowledge.

If you want to add new features not originally in the game, or mess with the engine itself, then you'll need some programming knowledge.

I got my old pc I used in school a few years back and I found a ROM hack I was working on where the world has gone to shit.
Of course, me being an edgy teenager back then, a lot of dialogue is cringeworthy and plain stupid.
I never finished it, not even a single gym, but if anyone wants to play it, I'll upload the ROM.
Not sure if there are any bugs, but there probably are since I was still learning how to hack back then.
Going back to abandoned projects can be really funny, and seeing this again brought some memories.

Here is a breakdown of how moves are laid out in pokecrystal:

Definitions for each move. The macro at the top of the file more or less explains what they mean. What you're interested in is the EFFECT_ constants. Those are in constants/battle_constants.asm. It's just a list of constants that maps to the list of move effects. That's in battle/moves/move_effects_pointers.asm.

This is where all the move effects are. Most of the labels (Pound: KarateChop: etc) are just there for show. The ones that do matter are the ones that you can find in the list from before (like NormalHit:). You will want to reference the new move effect later.

The commands are pretty much cut and paste. Seriously, paste it to make a new block (it doesn't matter where). In particular, look at BatonPass and NormalHit. You can probably just copy the NormalHit commands, and shoehorn a "batonpass" command in there at the right place.

This will act like Baton Pass, which you don't quite want. At this point, you'll want to make sure the move works before experimenting with it.

So how do we get it to work? You want to do the following:
>Add EFFECT_U_TURN to the list of constants.
>For the sake of explanation, replacing an existing move is simpler. Adding a new one isn't hard, but there's more gruntwork. So just change the effect of the move you're replacing to EFFECT_U_TURN.
>Now EFFECT_U_TURN needs to map to something. Go to move_effects_pointers.asm, and put "dw UTurn" at the bottom.
>What does UTurn mean? Nothing yet. To tell the game what it is, you go back to the move effect commands you just made, and put "UTurn:" at the top.

What >>25090895 said; you can have not-exactly 2x2 homogenous spaces but you have to set your tileset as such; say you wanted the left two squares of the 2x2 to be trees and the right two squares to be grass, you can do that but it takes up a tileset slot for the area. You have a LOT of different 2x2 areas in that image, it wouldn't remotely fit in standard GSC.

That being said, if I understand correctly there's a patch for GSC that expands the tileset to 256, I'm not entirely sure how it works and if your map would work in a ROM with that patch applied, but I'm just speaking for default GSC.

Just played through it. I gotta say anon, it has/had a lot of potential. It's not as edgy as I was expecting, although there were some edgy elements, like Brandon's dialogue and the Magikarp soup thing. The only bug I encountered (Although I wasn't really looking for them) was that the game crashes when you speak to the lady in the entance building to the forest.

General thoughts:

Went back on my "no recruitable starters" rule and added Cyndaquil, Squirtle and Chespin. Also made an awful attempt to make the sprites blend in better with Wesnoth's art style.

Cyndaquil has Eruption, and it works pretty much as it does in the games. Squirtle's Aura Sphere is more accurate than regular moves, and Chespin can heal its HP back with Drain Punch.

I haven't played it but I'm tired of really tiny starting towns. The starting town should have at least a mart and center since most towns in Pokemon do. It's dumb that the starting village doesn't. A change of pace is nice.

But anon, this town has neither. Or a gym, or a prof's lab, or even your Rival's house. It's a big, literal crater with some (Empty) houses, a town hall, and a few little mountains. Play it and see what I mean.

I'm not saying having a sizable starting town is always necessarily a bad thing, but when it's as empty as your usual starting town, it doesn't need to be this vast.

It's some type of strategy game being modded to have Pokémon in it. I totally agree, I just don't have many options. There are dozens of different environments in this game, each composed of around 20 different layers, so to make the sprites match I have to modify the Pokemon themselves. I'm not an artist, so it's difficult.

And I'm sorry if I'm spamming the thread. I come from a gamedev forum with a philosophy of "POST PROGRESS ALL THE TIME" and it's hard to shake that off.

Crystal (as well as Red) has been fully disassembled. You can edit the source code of the game directly, then compile it with the changes you made. It requires a small-to-large amount of assembly knowledge depending on what you want to do (just changing Pokémon, trainers, moves, maps, etc., is easy and requires almost no knowledge, coding in features or messing with the engine requires you to know a bit more though).

This is where the disassembly is, there are instructions in the INSTALL.md file for how to get started and get it working. You can ask for help here or in the IRC chat (linked in README.md) if you can't figure something out or run into trouble.

It might seem confusing at first but as soon as you get the basic idea of what folder holds what it's like a hundred times easier than hacking traditionally with dozens of different tools.

I've actually considered and worked on a pokemon mod thingy for wesnoth a few years ago but never actually made anything out of it because of the obvious obstacle of this shit never being allowed on the add-ons server. I'm really afraid of diving into Lua because I'm a shit coder and WML is badly documented enough as it is. But I'll probably have to if I want to implement Mega Evolution (which you can activate via right-clicking, but only on one Pokemon per scenario).

I do have several custom effects implmented through WML, though. Foul Play gets its damage from the opponent's attack, U-turn and Volt Switch cause the user to retreat (these moves have a weighting of 0 so it doesn't trigger on the opponent's turn). Chlorophyll, Intimidate, Fur Coat, Moxie, Arena Trap, Dry Skin, Victory Star, Aftermath, Snow Warning and Solid Rock work as intended. Pokemon like Castform and Cherrim can change formes depending on terrain and the time of day, respectively.

Right click menus are easily done with [set_menu_item]. Forme transformation is something I've done with vampires, but it shouldn't be hard to limit that to one per scenario, especially since WML vars are scenario-scoped.

An "edgy" fangame is one that tries to be adult by bumping up the hypothetical ESRB rating. The bad guy trying to kill a Pokemon is edgy, "he was given a tiny box" is not.

Honestly, I don't have any finalized plot for my hypothetical hack, but I was thinking of taking it in the complete other direction; people have noticed the whole "child stops evil team" trend and when someone notices you're on the roll you're on, randomly bumping into the villains and such and walking through them like wet tissue paper, people recognize "oh shit it's one of thoe guys" and you either start gaining more support from benevolent forces like Gym Leaders and/or the villainous team starts putting a disproportionate amount of force into stopping what's essentially a ten-year-old, justifying how you run into every admin multiple times; they're seeking you out trying to take you down.

I'd still keep it idealized in the sense that there's no Nuzlocke rules and you're not in danger in a "meta" sense since whiting out jut takes you to the Center where you can go back and try again, but take the whole "kid can do shit he shouldn't" and exaggerate it.

There will be eight corrupt Digimon around the land who [insert plot device here] open the way to Mt. Infinity, or the Elite 4 as you guys may know it. inside they will fight the dark masters (Puppetmon-grass, MetalSeaddramon-Water, Machinedramon-steel, puppetmon-psychic.) before taking on the Final boss/Champion, Apocalymon.

I've been toying with the idea of making a secret zone where the player will fight a wild mon known as the D-Reaper (Digimon Anime 3) that will have 255 stats. For the masochists.

Overhauled textures to resemble more like R/S/E less saturated overworld, more B/W saturated Pokes and edited shiny textures.
Edited music which will have things sound more like R/S/E because let's be honest, OR/AS disappointed in some pieces.
Edited battles to be more like R/S/E with better challenges, sound effects will be edited to be 3rd gen style, some, subjective cries will be reverted.

The way I see it badges should basically be rank. Pokemon world works on sort of old world logic. Once you're a teenager you're basically an adult and you can start your life on your own. If you join the league as a trainer the world acknowledges that you want to be strong. You run into legendary Pokemon on your journey if you make it that far. Gym leaders do public service and take care of some things outside of just battling so why wouldn't a badge be like some sort of status symbol? If you've passed the first gym you're proven to be strong and you wield mighty power so why shouldn't people respect you? A kid can do anything an adult can so he will be treated like one.

What are some ways to encourage discovery in a less linear Pokémon game? I want a stronger sense of discovery, and less focus on a single plot. Current ideas so far:
• Non-linear gym configuration. Their teams depend on how many badges you already have.
• Teasing players with inaccessible locations, that they can access later either via overworld abilities or by coming from another area.
• Lots of different objects that you can interact with if someone in your party has a specific move, e.g. "the soil appears loose, would you like to use dig?" (Basically dive for land.)
• Regional differences in Pokémon in terms of moves and abilities, or depending on climate. A cottonee found in the fog might know Parting Shot, while one found in the snow/hail could have Fur Coat as a "hidden ability", for example.
• Lots of side-quests, which can be triggered by talking to NPCs or finding mysterious key items. Some might evolve into larger storylines, like ones revolving around certain Legendary Pokémon.
• Legendaries that are difficult to come across. Sometimes you find them in the middle of large- and difficult-to-navigate areas like Articuno, requiring puzzles like the Regis, or conditions that are difficult to achieve (like having to beat every Trainer to access Victini.)
• Subtle worldbuilding with locations that evoke a sense of mystery, like the Ruins of Alph and Sevii Islands. Seemingly arbitrary eerie things, like Hearthome Church ("In the morning, one can see a piece of the wall jutting out behind the stone tablets on either side of the inside.", according to Bulbapedia.)

it was just a convenient way to install the packages from the command line. you can do the same thing by rerunning the cygwin installer and searching for the packages manually (despite what it tells you, it will not reinstall cygwin).

it's really stupid and cygwin should come with a tool that's like apt-cyg, but it doesn't

Hey, so I've been revisiting stuff I used to like ages ago and I got to wondering, how come there's no version of Tamagotchi where you have to catch all 800+ of them? Surely that would appeal to collector maniacs like us. Then I figured that'd make for an interesting Pokémon romhack/Essentials game, especially with all the branching and overlapping evolutionary lines and so forth.

Of course, the question then becomes how would you implement that in a Pokémon style game? In Tamagotchi, the creatures evolve differently depending on how well you raise them but aside from happiness/Amie, there aren't many ways you could do that in Pokémon- and even then, if you stuck to happiness, you could have them at the highest stage of evolution by about level five. One supposes you could give them evolutions based on a combination of level AND happiness, but then making them miserable to get a rare evolution is more of a chore than making them happy, especially once you've been training them for ages.

Any thoughts on how this might be achieved? Obviously there are other concerns too like how exactly one would match the attacks and types up but that could be based on aesthetics and each Tamagotchi's canon skills and abilities.

You'd have to code it yourself unless someone else did it and made the code for it public.

If I were to do so (keep in mind I'm a scrub at coding anything and I haven't even messed with Gen 3) I'd make it so it checks your level and your badge count after a Pokémon faints and you're about to divvy Exp. You'd also need to make assorted code here or there so you can't gain Exp. in the Daycare, can't use Rare Candies, etc.

I know there's a Crystal hack that included a level cap this way, when you hit a certain level it stops giving you experience once you're 1 point away from levelling up.

Because gyms are non-linear, you should be able to reach them all without HMs, or at least the vast majority. I could also buff all the ones that are legitimately awful. To some extent I do agree, but I think it can be manageable as long as the requirements aren't excessive, and are front-loaded instead of appearing three levels into a cave.

Does anyone have a collection of 4th gen tilesets for generic areas like routes, winter routes, caves, marsh, etc? I might just find a game to nab them from. Setting them up is such a chore, and somebody is bound to have done it already.

I'm starting to think the song SPEEDS UP at points in the middle of slowing down. Why isn't there some tool to convert midis to BPM so I can take note of the changes instead of having to do it by trial an error? I usually have an ear for music when there aren't a million overlapping parts in a weird key with half the notes being so quiet you can't make out the pitch, but I'm completly stumped. I really want to do some other cover but I put way too much time to give up on this when it's a few measures away from looping.

I'm almost tempted to seek for help, but the one guy who does those super good covers of Sinnoh music only appears online once every three months, so it'd be a toss-up whether I could finish it first before those three months pass.

Hey if you have ableton it has a "convert melody to midi" function which (if you leave the original rip of the song unwarped and the project at the correct tempo if you know it) should show you roughly whereabouts the tempo changes. It's not a perfect algorithm but it should pick up the main melody/melodic elements and you can use the grid/markers as a reference.

yes i've been editing with wordpad. thing is, i can't add new paragraphs or, when i try to save, wordpad stops recognizing the format (.asm) and i can't save it without deformatting. how can i make this work?

And we don't know what game he's hacking. If it's FireRed then he could if he wanted, but I don't think they've ported it to Emerald yet in case he chose that as a base.

Eh, I don't think it's needed. That anon posted it in an earlier thread and I suggested he add a fifth Pokémon to the eighth Gym, but having six Pokémon on every trainer I don't think is necessary as long as a lot have 3-5.

I probably wouldn't ram 6 mons on the first gym, because that pressures players into catching and training a lot of stuff they might hate (or overpowered it with levels, which is no fun). Probably infuriates anyone trying to nuzlocke it as well.

I think that at least gym 6+ should have 6 mons though. If the player doesn't have a full roster by that point, it's their fault.

Looking back, seems it's been in every version since at least three.

About self-inserts, Amethyst has stated that she didn't want to play a role in Reborn but her close friends felt that she "deserved" it because she organized the PO Reborn League (which is what the game is based around and why everyone and their mother is a gym leader). Hence she minimized herself to an "insignificant professor' and has downgraded her appearance to look "unimportant" as of Episode 15.

I'm thinking about the hacks listed in the OP or meme sapphire. Can't possibly be any worse than not wanting to play the games.

I think I might not want to play them partially out of the bout of depression I've been in lately. It's basically become a habit of load game, remember childhood, magic lost, get sad, turn off, and I feel like I can't enjoy the games I did as a child because nostalgia ruins them for me. I hate that I've grown to be so embittered.
